Today we’d like to introduce you to Rodahina Pasteurin.
Hi Rodahina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I believe that big things have small beginnings. Growing up in a Haitian household, I often felt misunderstood as a child and early on, I hoped for more. This led me to turn to entertainment as a form of escape. When I realized that a camera could be the source of a new reality, I was convinced to create the world that I wanted to see with the characters that I needed. From that point forward, I began recording short films for my church in an effort to explore my passion for film and excitement for storytelling. Still, I hoped for more. My ambition to capture and document the world around me was ignited further when I attended my alma mater, Tuskegee University. The electrifying encouragement at my HBCU from my mentors and peers reassured me that my odd propensity to transmute human experience through a virtual interface was not strange after all, it was important. Since then, my mission has evolved to create, preserve and inspire black stories.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing valuable comes without some level of adversity or at least challenge. This is how we grow. This piercing proverb, while true, is hard to accept when things do not go as planned, I’ve always been an optimist but when my camera equipment was stolen one day before a photoshoot, I felt defeated for the first time. This feeling came only days after taking a personal vow to fully dedicate myself to my journey as a full-time photographer and filmmaker. Still, I hoped for more. I knew that a brief moment of temporary disenchantment would not disempower a legacy that is meant to thrive. I soon remembered that my journey is part of my destination, and just as much, the travel is part of my journey. I have faith in the stories that I capture to last the test of time. While I understand that I am still in the beginning of this journey, the story continues to evolve and I grow with it every chapter.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a full-time photographer and videographer. I have always been fascinated by how things look up close and behind the scenes. I currently specialize in portrait photography and recording, producing and editing behind-the-scenes content including documentaries. I am most proud of the positive interaction I have the opportunity to promote between my lens and the person in front of me. What sets me apart is that I know myself and I know my thoughts whereas others know me not. This allows me to view every moment as an opportunity to introduce the world to something never before seen.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’ve never felt lucky but I have always felt protected. This feeling that “everything will be okay” has strengthened my belief that even when things seem bad, they have an opposite. Therefore, when I am met with situations that seem unbearable, I remember that everything will work out for me and my vision. This feeling of protection makes me feel fearless which provides me with the momentum I need to be a better creator and individual.
