Rising Stars: Meet Arianna Silen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arianna Silen.

Hi Arianna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture with a thesis in Visual and Critical Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. While having an architectural background, I have a comprehensive art history, fine art, and critical understanding that has formed my perspective by which I approach each and every project.

As a creative and designer, I find myself constantly questioning what new connections I can draw across different creative disciplines. It is through these newly found connections that interesting and meaningful work emerges. This interest has manifested itself in the interweaving of graphic design, art direction, illustration, writing, object design, and painting. With color, composition, and negative space there are infinite possibilities of visual expression.

It is truly difficult to find a design studio that has an experimental spirit. That is why I decided to found dibujo, a multi-disciplinary design and creative studio. With dibujo, I feel free to create, experiment and ultimately have fun. I always try to challenge myself, constantly testing my creative limits by working across different mediums and scales.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a process, like most good things. I have really enjoyed the clients that I have gotten to work with and am excited about the culmination of work I am producing. I see dibujo grow with each project and that is a result of all of the care and time I put into my work. It is a challenge as a one person team, but I collaborate with other creatives and designers on larger projects.

When I come across bigger challenges, I always go back to the reason why I started dibujo and reconnect to the purpose. That feeling of doing something that you’re very passionate about is what fuels dibujo every day.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am interested in understanding the cultural and social meanings of visual experience. dibujo has no particular focus, it spans across different creative mediums. My projects range from art direction to experiential design. I am interested in crossing boundaries of different disciplines. That is where my most interesting and successful work emerges from. When I approach a project with an experimental perspective, connections are made and new ideas take root. The result is a combination of poetic and practical, aesthetic, and functional. Through imagination and creativity, every project in dibujo is an opportunity to challenge our curiosities.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
In the end, it’s all about creating a visual experience. That is the most valuable lesson that I have learned along the way and I always go back to that thought during my creative process. How can I tell the story? What is necessary? Is the message clear?

I am drawn to design that is simple and seemingly effortless; design that makes sense from process to the final product with a clear logical path. Working across different mediums and scales, I see the value in every project as an opportunity to experiment with material, form, scale, and function. I use all of the creative tools available to me in order to convey a message.
