Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Rodriguez.
Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a third-generation contractor. I was born into a family of contractors. My childhood was spent playing in my families showrooms, climbing racks in warehouses and learning to drive forklifts. I was going on-site visits with my Dad or Abuelo on the weekends and would help them measure and draw floor plans. By the time I was 17, I was signing my own contracts during summer vacations.
I never wanted to be a contractor. Anytime anyone would ask me if I was going to take over the family business, my answer was always no. I wanted to be a paleontologist, then a lawyer and when I got to college, I studied advertising because it sounded like more fun than law school.
A hundred jobs later, I was working corporate marketing at the time my daughter was born. I fell in love with her immediately and realized I could not continue working the long structured hours being demanded, so it was time for a change. I humbled myself and went to my father for help. He offered me what he could at the time, part-time helping with deliveries and odd jobs. Just until I figured out what my next move was.
Weeks turned into months and the lifetime of background I had ended up being incredibly useful and a lot more fun than I would have expected. I started managing my own projects, landing my own clients and eventually set off on my own in 2016. It’s funny to think about how long I avoided what I now love doing everyday. Piso Project is the culmination of all my experience and the wisdom from my family.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My greatest struggle has always been investing too much of myself into things.
When I first started the business, I would micromanage every detail, I would babysit every project, take every call… humor every complaint. I had to learn to prioritize my own well-being before my business, how to trust people to get the job done and how to balance ambition with enough time to cook dinner and feed a little girl.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a specialty building contractor specializing in luxury flooring and finish work. My company works predominantly in the procurement and installation of stone, wood, tiles and has the ability to work with any other finish material. I employ highly skilled artisans and master craftsmen with decades of experience in their trades.
I’d like to think we’re known for being the best. We work mainly with luxury developers, architects and designers. Most of our clients have been with us for years and value our insight and experience over everything else.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I have never relied on being lucky, I work smart and hard. Though I am 100% aware that I have always had more than enough on my side.
