Today, we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Yvette Holmes (fondly called Dr. Yvette).
Dr. Holmes has experience that extends across industries and professions.
The Practitioner
Dr. Holmes has made an everlasting impact on the communities she serves. A Houston native, Dr. Holmes earned her BS and MBA from Florida A&M University. Upon graduation, Dr. Holmes began her career as the Advertising & Sales Manager for a regional bank where she was both the only African-American manager and youngest at the management level. As such, she used her academic expertise in business, management, and marketing toward establishing promotional efficiency for the Bank; focusing on developing and implementing the advertising strategy for over 70 office locations across three states while spontaneously serving as an example to other young employees. After this role and intent on helping others, Dr. Holmes became a pharmaceutical sales representative where she worked alongside other professionals to creatively offer alternative treatment plans to improve the quality of life of many.
The Consultant
Today, Dr. Holmes’ accomplishments are two-fold: practical and academic. On the business practice side of things, Dr. Holmes offers strategic consulting and executive training to entrepreneurs. Her efforts are particularly directed toward helping organizations thrive and adjust in the ever-changing business environment.
The Professor
Continuing to serve our community today, as a Marketing Professor, Dr. Holmes mentors young, aspiring professionals – both inside and outside the classroom. Because young adults consider Dr. Holmes as relatable and inspirational, she is often called upon to speak at events in the community and to support students matriculating through college. In addition to offering her support to young professionals, Dr. Holmes volunteers her time to advise and coach University teams in business competitions.
The Scholar
Dr. Holmes has a global impact. She develops studies to enhance scholarly research and business practices alike. Her research has been accepted, published and/or presented in Durban, South Africa, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Paris, France to name a few places. With several other professional projects underway, it is evident that Dr. Holmes is making an impact in her field and on the world.
The Author
As a young, successful professional in her field, Dr. Holmes has made a name for herself. Through her civic and scholarly affiliations, Dr. Holmes seeks to join together students and business professionals committed to education and career development, while enhancing the economic wealth of the community. That drive has led Dr. Holmes to write her first book on business education targeting current and aspiring business leaders, as well as students who need to learn the fundamental concepts of business in eight days.
The Achiever
Dr. Holmes’ colleagues and friends hold her in high esteem as she was recently nominated as an up-and-coming, under 40, minority scholar who is making a mark in academia based on a number of factors. The most important factor to the Emerging Scholar award is uniqueness in scholarship, commitment to teaching and/or community service, scholarly awards, honors, and academic accomplishments. Further evidence of her peers holding her in high regard is Dr. Holmes’ recent nomination as a “Rock Star” in Tallahassee’s Women Who Mean Business initiative. Dr. Holmes was recognized as an up and comer of the next generation who has achieved much in just a short years in the professional world. The recognition suggests that Dr. Holmes is ageless when it comes to her professionalism, vision, and her energy, which propels her to business woman stardom. Last year, Dr. Holmes was named at Top 35 Millennial Influencer of America because she has an exceptional career foundation, holds several designations, and is involved in the community.
Outside of the classroom, Dr. Holmes can be described as a fitness enthusiast who maintains an active lifestyle with a continued focus on nutrition and innovative fitness programs. She formerly co-founded a comprehensive training center for youth with a mission to develop fundamental academic and athletic skills necessary for student athletes to succeed.
All in all, it’s safe to say that Dr. Holmes is a woman you will want to watch in the years to come.
A Quote from Dr. Holmes:
“Over the years, I have worked with a diverse group of people. In those teams, I aim to maintain a positive constructive mindset, a willingness to not only lead, but also to serve, and a vision of excellence. My grandmother instilled in me to always be a servant-leader who exemplifies leadership and scholarship. Professionally, I take an active role in working with people who are productive, and committed to teaching excellence, scholarly research, and business development. When working as a consultant to industry professionals, I push them to commit to excellence in the design and delivery of cutting edge business practices. Personally, I have a strong passion for fitness and all things athletic. God has blessed me with many gifts and I plan on putting them all to good use.”
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The hardest thing that I ever worked through was obtaining my PhD. It was difficult to transition back to school after having already graduated with two degrees and entering the work force. Still, I made the sacrifice to “live like a student” knowing that the sacrifice would pay off in the end. I almost didn’t finish from the program where I started. That was a tough time.
But, I’m reminded that nothing worth having comes easy. I knew that greater was coming. And today, I’m glad that I persevered to earn my doctorate degree.
If it had not been challenged in that way, I would not be so blessed today… I would have never known how anointed I would be today.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as really being pleased with yourself, your work and the people around you.
There are three main ingredients I’d say contribute to success: the thing you do, the people you do it with and where you’re doing it. If any one of those is off kilter, then you compromise your success and happiness.
When you are doing the right thing with the right people in the right place, you feel terrific. You feel happy about your work. You feel satisfied at the end of the day. That’s where I am today.
I believe that success is not an accident. Failure is not an accident either. There’s this scientific law of cause & effect. Biblically, it’s the law of sowing and reaping. And I focus on the “causes” and the seeds.
