Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Torres.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Veronica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up in Miami, Art became a constant in my life once I attended DASH, a Design Magnet program for Highschool, where both Art and Design became part of your daily curriculum. I feel blessed and inclined to mention this as part of my story to have gone to such a positive and gifted school amongst some of the best inspiring creatives of this generation. Being in this environment, it challenged me to find and explore my voice as an artist from an early point in my life and provided me the knowledge and network to build up a portfolio that got me a scholarship, and ultimately the opportunity to study abroad and align myself with my visions and dreams. I went on to study Graphic Design in New York and progressed into the 3D with a BS in Environmental Design and Spatial Experience from ACCD in California.
I’m interested in work that re-imagines the boundaries of what aesthetic experience is supposed to be about. My Degree could be considered Architectural but more centered on the human experience; I tend to work from the inside out, instead of the outside in. Meaning I learned to look and break down a space from a psychological standpoint: from the structure itself, down to the materials, color theory, fixtures, surfaces, lighting, sensorial qualities .
The consistent intention and drive behind my work is essentially simple; for it to be functional art. Living somewhere in this in-between of ’freedom and function’ where I wish the work to hold purpose and reason whilst still feeling spontaneous.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being in different schools, I’ve had the privilege to be extremely creative and develop a distinctive way of thinking where formalities didn’t limit my process. With these strong ideas, I now challenge myself to develop those concepts with the restraints of the real world without losing this energy. A constant battle as a designer is to balance my voice and preferences without losing sight of the client’s wants and needs. Trying to personalize the projects to the brand without compromising my vision and aesthetic. It’s always a collaboration, working and learning together.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
As a multidisciplinary designer, I balance my voice through the forms of Concept Development, Environmental Design and Spatial Experience, Sculpture, and Brand Identity/Graphic Design. My range of interest and involvement is what sets me apart from other artists and designers. I can do it all. My degree in Environmental Design, while still having a heavy focus on space, has an extensive and broad curriculum that has enabled me to see the big picture and how all forms of design come together. I have strong vision and intuition on where to take projects. My strengths lie in listening, research, conceptualizing, branding, prototyping, designing, and implementing. I’m familiar and invested every step of the way, from ideation to reality.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
There’s nothing that makes me feel more centered and alive than being in a creative flow, making a difference. I see the impact of design and the effect it has on culture. That is what defines success for me: when the benefits reap beyond the directly involved. As long as I do my work, trust in the process, stay open to opportunities and stay true to myself, I will be successful, and the rest will follow. I’m ready to create positive cultural change and contribute to the conversation on levels small and large. I want to grow and collaborate with passionate people to create a happier and better future.
