Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Palmer.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Garage Yourself originated from a lifetime love and understanding of mechanics. From a young age I’ve had a keen mind and strong curiosity for the inner workings of most things involving physics, engineering and basically anything that could be taken apart and put back together (possibly better than it had started out to be) 🙂 At the point that Garage Yourself was an idea I had already worked for a few garages, companies and dealerships and wanted to do something more beneficial and satisfying not just for myself but others. Garage Yourself is a solution to that, I get the satisfaction of sharing my knowledge of mechanics with people along with helping them achieve their goals and they have the satisfaction of knowing their vehicle is getting the proper time and care it deserves and they also enjoy a sense of pride being able to accomplish many jobs, projects, etc. whether it’s for the first or hundredth time.
Has it been a smooth road?
Anything that is a smooth road is not as satisfying as working hard, overcoming obstacles and growing into a dream that you set yourself on the path to. Instant gratification in my general opinion doesn’t last. So yes, there have been struggles just as many businesses struggle here in a state where many people leave during hot months of the year but I wouldn’t want things to be any different. The great times generally tend to outweigh the bad.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Garage Yourself story. Tell us more about the business.
First of all, I’m extremely proud to say there is only one other do it yourself garage in the country that is older than Garage Yourself. There have been others that have tried and failed over the years, so the fact that we are still here and going strong speaks volumes.
The basic concept of Garage Yourself is people bring their vehicles in for whatever reason whether it’s maintenance, repair, upgrades or anything in between, we rent them a bay which includes a hydraulic professional lift, tools including pneumatic tools and advice or maybe just an extra set of eyes or hands.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The do it yourself industry needs to be put out there in the mix of the popular social culture to catch fire. If not, it will be buried and drowned out by the bigger companies that would possibly be threatened by a culture that is self-sufficient. Corporations play into the instant gratification social aspect of this world and we feel people need to hear that they have options, they don’t have to buy into the hype if they choose not to. We offer them that option of freedom of choice.
