Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Headley and Ralph Jacob.
Todd and Ralph, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
CykleJab was created to bridge the gap with group fitness and innovative workouts. The two best bang for your buck fitness modalities is perfectly split into our 50-minute sessions. 20 minutes on a spring-loaded, total body core-engaging bike and 20 minutes on a water-filled punching bag for boxing. Think cardio and core the entire time, lower body on the bikes and upper body boxing!!! We are constantly trying to prove our value to our community and getting the message out that we are a start-up, not a franchise and we cannot wait to grow our dream.
Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all, partner difficulties and getting the word out bc not a lot of people view downtown Miami Shores as a hot spot for retail and new businesses. This is changing in our favor every day. We rely heavily on our amazing customers to spread the word along with social media advertising. Now, that we have made the partner changes, we are able to dive deeper into our local community. Also, shifting class schedules and times to maximize our start-up budget but still trying to keep customers happy. Lastly, we use a lot of technology and that definitely has its’ hiccups from time to time. All of this being said, we are trending in the right direction and get amazing feedback from clients when they experience a class.
(Ralph) A business startup is constant learning on the fly experience and even if we are meticulously planning for X, Y and Z, surprises always occur. We are friends first Todd and I and that helps diffuse the stress and keep focus on the goal: Offer the Ultimate 50 mn workout experience. But a smooth road? No!! Lo!l I wouldn’t say it has been a smooth road, but we have enjoyed every curves, hills, and bumps because it made us and Cyklejab better.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
We absolutely love our brand, I really think we knocked it out of the park between the name, equipment, class style and even colors! We set ourselves apart bc of the high-end equipment and the actual atmosphere we provide in each and every class.
(Ralph) We are obsessed with making sure that whoever walks into Cyklejab will have an absolute blast of a workout while feeling that they are at a club!
Once we explained the hand positions on the bike and the workout of the day, we dim the light raise the volume and the party is full on!!
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
Besides the obvious, I think I would have scaled back tremendously in the beginning as far as a number of trainers and classes we began with. It simply wasn’t sustainable but it also felt very “chicken or the egg”, so lesson learned. Also, you will never please everyone, so don’t even try, stick with your gut and treat people fairly and with respect and it will all work itself out!
(Ralph) That is a good question, with hindsight I would have spent less $ in some area and a lot more in others but as I said before, everything seemed to be perfect on paper and in our mind until we put ideas into actions. So, between human errors, personality incompatibility and let’s face it, just plain bad ideas, what I would have done differently is to start “smaller” in every aspect of the business.
