Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Gordon.
Hi Tiffany, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Becoming the creator and designer for Ukeme has been the most inspiring undertaking of my life. In 2018, I can remember being at home, a little bored and I told myself I need to find a new hobby, something where I can use my hands and become creative. I looked to the back of my closet and found an old oversized denim thrift jacket. I bought some fabric paint and spray paint cans from the arts and craft store and started hand painting and spray painting on various materials, then eventually I started selling them. It was a fun moment in time, especially knowing that people supported and took a liking to my designs. As time went on, I decided to take fashion to another level.
I envisioned a brand where contemporary meets high-end streetwear. My main focus is to create and sustain a brand that focuses on top-quality fabrics, artistic concepts, and storytelling messages. From there, Ukeme characters were introduced. As a collective, they go by the name Monsterchild. Each character has a personality trait that influences the creation of designs. Over this period, Ukeme has blossomed into a brand that I’ve always visualized as a designer.
With my experience on this journey, I’ve learned that success is imminent and forever expanding!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing great comes easy! For me, I’ve always been content and understanding of that. Being a designer consists of learning new skills, figuring out what I like and don’t like, what works and doesn’t work, and much more. Theres been times I’ve had creators block for long periods which delayed projects.
There were also times when opportunities did not fall through because of wrong timing but I always told myself whatever is meant for you will not pass you by. The struggle was tough at times but Ukeme is here, and I am grateful for every bump in the road, it forced me to become resilient.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I title myself as a designer rather than being labeled as a fashion designer. I always felt like it would put me in a box of only creating fashion wear. I design clothes, I’m a painter and graphic designer, I make accessories, and I’m also expanding to toys, sculpting, and houseware.
Being a creative free thinker allows me to create outside the fashion world. Most people are familiar with my designing clothes, but there’s much more to who I am. I’m most proud of doing what I love, believing in myself, and staying true to my purpose. Being a female designer that creates unisex streetwear/contemporary clothing sets me apart from many designers.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
As a child, I had wild dreams and imaginations, and I use to turn them into realities. This played a major part in my life to this day. I consider myself analytical, a perfectionist, and determined. Having these true qualities fit me best in all of my life pursuits.
Being analytical allowed me to think logically, especially in technical situations. The perfectionist quality taught me design placements, angles, and precision. Determination is what kept me going every day.
