Meet Steven La Fonte of Steven La Fonte Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven La Fonte.

Steven, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My passion for interior design began in 1990 while living in Manhattan, New York.

I was a partner in custom drapery workroom designing draperies with high end designers. I decided to pursue a career in design. My inspiration comes from fashion, nature, music, scents and hotels. Listening to clients is very important. Sometimes, it is just a few words or them providing a few images that inspire the design direction for their home.

Most recently, I had a client who explained to me that they wanted a “quiet home”. That direction was all I needed to create their dream home.

In 1998, I relocated my business to Miami. I find that designing interiors in south Florida is very interesting because my clients are quite receptive to the many different design elements.

Has it been a smooth road?
I am very fortunate that I have put together a team of great contractors and vendors. My clientele is primarily based on referrals and social media is now amazing exposure for us.

It is very important to have a contract that is clearly understood by everyone involved in the project. That helps tremendously with many of the challenges in this profession. Being a good communicator and listener is paramount. It is also important to be articulate, genuine and approachable.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Steven La Fonte Design story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in high end residential projects. We also work with several architects on commercial projects.

I am very proud of all of my projects. I have just completed the Hochstein Medspa for Dr. and Mrs. Lenny Hochstein and I am also designing their estate on Star Island.

I work in New York and I’m currently designing a $49 million dollar spec home in Southampton. It’s an incredibly exciting project.

I am working on a renovation of a condo in Sunny Isles. What is so special about this project is that 10 years ago, I was the designer for this home and the clients invited the team back to handle the renovation.

I am known for luxury and functional interiors. I often design my own furnishings and have them manufactured locally which is much more cost effective. Quality control is also much better because my clients and I can “visit” the facility and see the progress.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The industry has changed so much over the past 5 years. In the future, I believe that consumers will continue to purchase through the internet. It is important that potential clients are educated and understand the value of hiring a professional designer. I feel that clean, comfortable and functional interiors will always be in style.
