Today we’d like to introduce you to Sindy Perez.
Sindy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my photography business by complete accident. I began a modeling career when I was 17 years old. It was all I ever wanted to do with my life for as far back as I could remember. After years of being in front of the camera and being transformed into countless versions of myself by makeup artists, I decided to try my hand at becoming a makeup artists. I never formally trained but instead would watch the artists at work while on set and would strike up conversations with them… asking countless questions. I started practicing on my friends and eventually that led to me starting my first business. I did professional makeup for weddings mostly for about five years and ended up working in education, teaching seminars on bridal makeup for a Makeup brand in London, NYC, Chicago and LA.
I bought my first DSLR in 2013 to photograph my brides makeup and then one day my cousin asked if I could take a few photos of her so she could submit to a modeling agency. I styled her, did her makeup and took her pictures. It was such an amazing day and honestly I felt a burst of creativity that I hadn’t felt in a very long time. I posted the photos on Facebook and to my surprise people began to ask me my rates! I was shocked!! I began asking my photographer friends questions and paying attention to the way they composed their shots and used lighting. I would intentionally try and get booked as much as I could as model for photography workshops so I could soak up as much knowledge as possible (while getting paid) and then go photograph my friends and use them as my muses until I refined my craft. I decided to focus the majority of my attention into growing a photography business and I’ve been a full time photographer for five years and I honestly Couldn’t see myself doing anything else.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was definitely not a smooth road… although somehow I never doubted that it was the road I needed to take. Miami is a huge city and photography is big business here. Getting priced out constantly with people low balling or working in exchange for exposure was a big hit. I had already experienced that as model when I first began and definitely did not want to go through it again. I felt like I had already paid those dues. I also had to learn my lessons regarding photography and intellectual property. Images being stolen and pawned off as someone else’s work… you name it, I’ve gone through it.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am most known for my Boudoir work. I have a real artistic approach to the style that I think sets me apart from other photographers. The fact that I was a model and can teach any woman, regardless of her experience, how to pose and move like pro has really helped in achieving the end goal of my client they all want that superstar experience and I feel like I am able to help them attain that in an environment that is relaxing, so much fun and most importantly where they feel safe. Boudoir is such an intimate thing and being a woman in this business with a background in front of the camera has been a huge catalyst for my success.
What makes me the most proud of what I do is that have the opportunity to help women see themselves in their most beautiful light. We as a women have so many insecurities and carry so much doubt. We constantly compare and judge ourselves and so to be able to show a woman how beautiful she is in the eyes of stranger is amazing… many times they’re in tears because they can’t believe that is them they’re seeing! That by far has been my biggest accomplishment.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Right now more than ever, I am just excited to get back to work and behind the camera. I have been putting much effort into going outside of my comfort zone and photographing different kinds of people. For example, I never thought I could photograph babies because I was incapable of delivering those super cute photos of babies inside of little baskets, wrapped up and dressed like a little koala. They’re beautiful but It just isn’t my style and so for so long I avoided it. It wasn’t until I was hired to photograph my friends newborn and posted the photos online that I realized there was a market for more moody, lifestyle images of newborns. It pushed me creatively and made me realize that I needed to put more energy into growing and evolving in my craft.
