Meet Simone Stewart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Simone Stewart.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I discovered my true passion for fashion when I started fashion school in Jamaica at 18 years old. I had to sell the majority of my belongings to come up with the tuition. When I entered the class there was no chair available for me, so I went out and bought my own chair so that I could be in the class. I was such a natural at my craft that my teacher immediately employed me at her job. After two years, I migrated to England where I was the head supervisor at a large fashion company, Albert and Sons. I later moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fl. It was so hard to continue my designer career because it wasn’t paying the bills and I didn’t have a good understanding of the industry in America. I worked a full-time job and pursued my craft in my spare time in my very small two bedroom apartment. My daughter encouraged me to start making custom prom dresses. She helped me start off by asking her friends to let me make their dresses. Other designers charged an arm and a leg to make a custom dress, but I wanted to be more affordable. It has branched off from there, every year I get more from clients. I have lost many customers because I was working in my small apartment; however last year I acquired enough money to get a larger space where my clients can feel more comfortable.

Please tell us about your art.
I am a fashion designer. I make everything that consists of fabric such dresses, custom pillows, suits, jackets, room decor, hats, etc. My aim is to bring a different taste to the fashion industry with my services. I am looking to bring a change to the stereotypical attire. One special thing about my designs is that they are not too revealing, but they are still beautiful. I want to show ladies that they don’t have to wear less to be attractive.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
I feel like the biggest challenge facing artists today is getting the word around about their works/business. I thank God for platforms like Voyager Magazine that helps new business owners like me market our business.
