Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Casey.
Sean, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I made some poor decisions when I was in my late teens early 20s ended up getting sentenced to 65 months in federal prison for drug trafficking marijuana. I was out of shape got introduced to some good guys who took fitness very seriously. In my last three years, I hit the books and the workouts hard teaching classes and ended up getting about nine different fitness certifications while inside. When I got out, I ended up at legacy fit (thank god every day for that). I was there for five amazing years the best time of my life. Now I’m starting out on my own have a couple things in the work but still to early to talk about you’re just going to have to wait and see
Has it been a smooth road?
Def wasn’t a smooth road. When I was first released to the halfway house, no one would hire me. I refused to work anywhere but a gym. They all loved me but when I went for follow-ups they couldn’t hire me because I was a convicted felon. I even offered to pay myself so the gym wouldn’t have to just to prove myself. Finally, I found a legacy fit. I begged Manning sumner for a job and he gave me an opportunity and I’m forever grateful to him for that. The first year was very difficult riding my bike to and from work putting in 80 hour weeks mostly cleaning, no training. It was really a struggle but if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change anything. I had to earn every step of the way and you have to start from the bottom to see how necessary the entire process really Is. Every little detail, everything matters.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a personal trainer. I use to teach a lot of Bootcamp’s but now all personal training. I feel like I’m one of if not the best trainer out there. I put in the work in the books and in the field. I’ve put about 20,000 hours into training and teaching classes over the last five years. I’m proud that I have been able to go this hard for this long consistently and I feel like that sets me apart, most people burn out or need a break I don’t feel like I’m slowing down anytime soon. I also feel like I adjust to the clients really well. Every client is different and you have to find what works best for them, not make them fit into your style of training it’s about the client always. The thing I’m most proud of is always when you can get that person to by in and change their lifestyle. Training is way more than giving a workout you have to figure out a way to change that person’s mindset so that they can dedicate themselves to a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. Most people won’t change and that’s normal being that disciplined can be tough, so it makes it that much more special when you start to see a change.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Our city, what’s not to like? So many different cultures, the beaches, the weather. There’s no place like Miami. I love Miami. I am Miami. You get the chance to interact with so many different types of people from different places. It really gives you a different perspective on life . Especially with all this media attention on the racism going around these days I feel like we don’t get as much in Miami because we interact with so many different races on a daily basis. No one is perfect everyone has their flaws but the more you interact with people the more you understand them. What I like least? Traffic? Lol, these masks. Miami is an easy place for people to get caught up. It will eat you alive if you can’t handle it, trying to put on for the gram. Seen people driving Lamborghinis but don’t have two dollars in their bank account. The Miami way lol.
