Today we’d like to introduce you to Sasha Jordan-Correa.
Sasha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Documenting moments and people was one of my first life passions. I took my first black and white film photography class when I was 14 years old as a school elective and from that moment on, I never stopped working on my craft. I continued to take a variety of photography classes throughout school and later in college. I began photographing creative projects for myself when I was a teenager and always had my camera on me documenting family and friends. Thirteen years ago I began to book small professional gigs starting with lifestyle portraits and eventually taking on small weddings and events. In 2010, I decided to take photography on full force, expanding the scope of photography services I covered. I went from being a freelance photographer to starting a photography company along with fellow photographer, Denise Díaz (currently working on other projects) and my husband as our business consultant among other roles in the company. This was the beginning of Omnia Photography, which means “all things photography”. Since then, we’ve covered every form of photography imaginable- weddings of all sizes, destination weddings, corporate events, creative/art projects, marketing photography, headshots, births, maternities, engagements, family portraits, quinceañeras, communions, baptisms, modeling portfolios, athletes, and so much more!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business will always have a few struggles attached to the journey. One of the biggest obstacles many artists face is taking the leap from doing what you love for fun or as hobby and turning it into your fulltime life endeavor. This was my biggest struggle. Luckily, I had incredible support and was able to make strong client relationships and subsequently build a great referral network from the beginning which allowed me to establish our business early on. Certain life milestones, like finishing a degree in a separate field and becoming a mother, have made certain times a little more challenging than others. I also like to be involved in every aspect of my business so I’m the main contact with all our clients, I spend endless hours bouncing ideas around with them, then photographing their session, wedding, or event, and finally, I do all post production work myself. I have a vision with every project I commit to and I have a hard time letting others take on some of the tasks involved. Because of this, high seasons can become overwhelming and time management has become essential. Additionally, I have improved business operations by working with great photography labs, marketing companies, and assistants and also by only committing our team to certain volume of work so we can provide clients with a personalized session and level service that will leave them genuinely happy with their photography experience and our team.
Omnia Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Omnia Photography is a full service photography company. Our specialty has become weddings and lifestyle portraits-mainly maternities, engagements, family and personal portraits. However, we do all forms of photography and have ongoing contracts for business/corporate and modeling headshots, marketing photography and even some school contracts! Being behind the lens for over 20 years now I’ve been able to see this industry evolve. Advances in technology and accessibility have inspired many people to photograph and it’s wonderful! With the growth of social media, more people have access to taking wonderful photographs and to edit right on their phones! The new professional photography trends include lavish, prop-filled set ups with Pinterest inspired themes and dramatic filters and editing during post production. I recognize the appeal in this style and have created these types of sessions for clients when requested. However, I think what sets me apart is that my style is more natural and photojournalistic. I studied photography at a time when it concentrated on lighting, composition, depth and (most importantly) the subject matter. My true passion when photographing is the people, pure moments, and beautiful raw emotions. I strive to build great relationships with our clients and work relentlessly on making our time together enjoyable and genuine so that it reflects in their portraits. Being let into people’s lives is an unbelievable privilege I deeply treasure, truly love, and will never take for granted.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My definition of success has changed greatly over the years! When I first started Omnia Photography I envisioned it would be “successful” when I achieved having high volume work, many employees and multiple studio locations and sets of equipment. Over time I have redefined success, personally, as being able to do what you love for a living and living a well-balanced life. Photography has been something I have enjoyed doing for such a long time that the ability to do it fulltime and make clients happy with my art is already an achievement I am grateful for everyday. I now believe that when people are excited to wake up most mornings to go do whatever it is that fills their day, have the means to afford the life they want to live (as simplistic or lavish as this may be) and are able to have time for health, self-care, friends, and family… they are successful!
