Today we’d like to introduce you to Sasha Graham.
Sasha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Halloween is my birthday! It kinda explains it all and my connection to the supernatural, spooky, and creepy stuff. Witches and demons, art and entertainment, movies and books captivated my imagination. I moved to NYC after high school in the 80s to pursue an acting career. It wasn’t surprising I was cast in “Anne Rice-style” live vampire theater and horror movies.
After a slew of low-budget horror movies landing at Blockbuster, I went on to Hunter College for a degree in Literature and Comparative Religion. Post graduation, I started publishing metaphysical, tarot books and tarot decks after working as an intuitive reader in NYC. These winding career paths connected entertainment, the creative imagination, and cultivating a sense of personal power while grounding the self in the unknown and mystery!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’m Gen X – so fill in the blank, haha. My childhood was a cookie cutter 80’s after-school-special. I grew up all over the United States (had a hippie teen mom), attended 7 different schools (it taught me to make friends), and lived in 27 different homes before age 17 (learned flexibility) and had 3 stepfathers (ugh – dad issues), so adulting, self-love, creativity, and stability were all super challenging.
My books, movies and tarot are all informed by the challenges that carved me into the human I am today. I write about magic and the supernatural because I am trying to figure it out.
How do we change negative cycles? How do we transcend who made us and where we came from? How can we find peace for ourselves and therefore the world? All of us carry a damaged child inside of us. How can we embrace inner pain, trauma, and anger (ie the Devil card in tarot) to release it?
I am deeply grateful for everything I’ve struggled with. As dark as it was – there is a brilliance and depth on the other side of it. Struggle and pain create a sense of compassion for others and what it means to be human. The great part? Little things make me really happy. I take nothing for granted.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I tie together entertainment, the supernatural, and creative storytelling in a way that helps anyone re-invent who they are and how they see the world! My “Dark Wood Tarot” is a bestseller and I’m proud of it because it goes deep and dark. It has given me an opportunity to travel the world, teach and speak about Divination and Shadow Self.
I created a live, monthly storytelling event in NYC, “Ghost Stories By the Fire.” It is like a spooky Moth event. My 90’s low-budget horror flicks have devoted fans so some people know me from the Blockbuster days. I still make horror movies when asked. My new film “Trivial” will be released in 2023. What sets me apart is that there’s no one else in the world who merges writing, hosting, acting, storytelling, tarot and the supernatural.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Happiness and magic each require the same essential element. Presence. Being rooted in the moment (that’s tarot’s World card). This is how you turn your entire life into an enchantment. Sounds cheesy but it doesn’t matter if I’m writing, drinking wine, hiking, chatting with my daughter, seeing a play, or doing yoga, if I can foster alignment with what’s in front of me, I am happy.
My friends, the streets of NYC, the forest, being alive in the world makes me happy too. Experiencing pleasure is the best. I’m a slave to my senses and love to root into the present moment via music, scent, taste, touch, movement. It is a delicious, tantric way of living life.
