Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Amritt.
Sarah, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in Panama City, Panama and moved to Miami with my parents and brother when I was 7 years old. I was raised in West Kendall and lived most of my life there. I proudly attended public schools growing up, and through hard work I graduated from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering and Master of Science in Civil Engineering. I currently wear many hats… I’m a mom, wife, civil engineer / project manager… but today I would like to tell you about my story as the inventor of the Omie View Bassinet Mirror and as an entrepreneur.
I came up with the idea of a bassinet mirror when my second daughter, Alana, was born. She was a very quiet sleeper and I was paranoid that she had either stopped breathing or had her face up against the side of the bassinet because she would slowly shift to the sides while sleeping. Even though this was my second baby, I never got the chance to experience this heightened worry with my older daughter, Suri, since she cried so much from colic and would hardly sleep as an infant. She constantly reassured me that she was breathing. My first idea was to order a bassinet mirror online since I just figured they existed, but could not find anything like what I needed. I went on the mommy blogs and found out that this was something that other new moms were talking about, but their solution was simply to duct tape a mirror to the bassinet, which I didn’t think the idea would be too safe or convenient. A couple of months went by and I finally told my husband, Omar, about the idea and he couldn’t believe that the product didn’t exist either. After he did his own online research, he agreed this was a great opportunity for us to develop this much-needed product. Omar then created our first prototype.
After patenting our idea, we created our company, Aluri, Inc., and worked on getting the Omie View Bassinet Mirror designed, engineered, and manufactured.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t. Our main struggle has been being a small business and being new to the manufacturing, distribution and online sales market. This is something we constantly work on overcoming, mainly through online research, talking with other entrepreneurs, and spreading the word about our small business.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Aluri – what should we know?
Our company is Aluri, Inc., whose sole function is to import, distribute and sell our product, the Omie View Bassinet Mirror. The Omie View Bassinet Mirror is the first and only product of its kind—a remote-controlled mirror made to help parents keep a clear view of their baby while they safely rest in a bassinet/crib. The bassinet mirror clips to the side of most bassinets, cribs, and playards. Families choose our product because it’s easy to use, works great for daytime and nighttime use, and provides peace of mind knowing you can easily check on your baby from any angle of the room, while not having to sit up or stand up every time you feel the urge to check on your baby. This is especially helpful for new mothers recovering from childbirth/c-section. So far, all of the positive feedback and reviews received show that parents are loving the Omie View!
We are most proud of having developed the Omie View, which we are sure can be an added tool for parents to watch over their babies and, as a result, may help reduce the number of incidents of SIDS/SUIDS. Knowing we can help save at least one baby is a huge achievement for us.
Looking into the future, some of our company goals include having the Omie View considered as a baby registry must-have, expand our market to other countries, and look into opportunities to develop other useful tools for parents.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Definitely perseverance. It’s not easy coming out of your comfort zone and starting a business. Let alone creating a product. There are a lot of hurdles and at times you feel like giving up, but it’s important to learn from each failure and get back up to continue working on your goals.
