Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Quintana.
Sam, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved going out and trying new restaurants around Miami. I started by following a lot of food Instagram pages so I could bookmark them and figure out where I wanted to try next. After following pages for a few months, I figured the foodie world was somewhere I could jump into. I was also really big into photography while in high school. Being a food blogger seemed like a perfect mix of both my passions. I started how basically everyone else starts this hobby. I’d go to restaurants or food spots, take photos, edit them, and then upload them to my Instagram, @biteofmia. I got to where I am today by staying consistent (posting as often as I can) and by remembering I started this to have fun. I see my page as a food journal that I get to share with whoever wants to follow.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never a smooth road with anything worth doing. One of the main struggles came when Instagram decided to switch up the algorithm. When the algorithm reboots and changes, fewer people see my photos which inevitably leads to fewer likes and less follows. This got me frustrated for a while, but when this frustration kicks in I usually just try to remind myself that I started my page for fun. I didn’t start it to get a mass following and to become famous. If that happens then it’s a bonus.
Please tell us about your business.
I’m in the foodie business. My specialization is taking pictures of food and helping to promote local businesses around Miami. I’m mainly known for my dessert photos and my punny food captions. I’m most proud of how long I’ve been able to keep my page running (3+ years and counting). I’d like to think my humor sets me apart from others. I’ve always tried to keep my page lighthearted and funny. I also think my main location (West Kendall) sets me apart from others. A lot of food pages like to focus on major areas of Miami such as Wynwood, Coral Gables, Miami Beach, etc. My main focus is the West Kendall/Kendall area. I grew up there and I strongly believe it deserves more reputation than it gets, especially when it comes to food.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the diversity of Miami. The diversity shows in a lot of ways, but my main focus is through the food. It’s amazing to be able to pick and chose what culture I want to try and it’s within a 20 mile distance from me. My main complaint about Miami is the traffic. No one likes sitting through an hour’s worth of traffic just to get home from work or a night out.
