Today we’d like to introduce you to Rudy Wilson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Rudy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I never knew I would be a comedian. While serving in the army, I made an attempt to convince a friend to try stand up comedy. He didn’t stick with it, but one day a random thought came to my head, “maybe I should try comedy”. My first time performing stand up was surprisingly great! I knew after that night I wanted to try again. Eventually, I fell in love with stand up comedy and knew this is what I’m supposed to do. Even though my comedy career started in Washington DC, I now live in Miami and have become one of the biggest rising stars in the south Florida comedy scene. I’ve been a comedian for three years.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I decided to end my army career and instead, pursue my career as a full-time comedian, a lot of people close to me didn’t agree. Some of the people who were closest to me and who was supposed to start my journey with me didn’t believe in the vision, and they abandoned me. Also, between my base salary and the $33,000 re-enlistment signing bonus that was offered to me, I would’ve accumulated over $80,000 in 2018 alone. Instead, I declined the offer. So now that I’m in Miami and I have lost close people and given up a lot of money, I pursue my career even harder, knowing this dream has cost me too much for it not to become a reality.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Stand Up Comedian – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a full-time comedian and master’s student. I study filmmaking at the New York Film Academy (South Beach). I’m committed to stand up comedy and writing/producing/directing films. In the stand-up comedy world, I am most known for my crowd work and energy I bring on stage.
How would you describe the type of kid you were growing up?
Growing up I was always into sports. I chased my NFL dreams for majority of my life. But as far as personality, I was and still am pretty reserved and quiet. I honestly never enjoyed being the center of attention. I’m also a very analytical thinker.
