Meet Ricardo Mualin of Financial One Group in Brickell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricardo Mualin.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ricardo. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
From the early beginnings, my professional career took me to work in the senior services industry. Having graduated in healthcare management, it was natural that I would be exposed to senior services in South Florida. After all, South Florida is among the country’s highest and most sought-after retirement areas is the US due to its climate and natural beauty. The first job I landed was in a healthcare organization, were I noticed that most of the seniors we served had very limited financial resources. Some of these seniors left the clinic and had no money to eat or even buy their medicine. To me, this was a real eye opener. It was always my belief that the “Golden Years” should be the most comfortable stage in life.

Later I worked for a national nonprofit organization that dealt with seniors. At the Alzheimer’s Association I realized that people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families incurred in tremendous financial hardship, just to help take care of their loved ones. By then it became obvious to me that for thousands and even millions of seniors in the US their retirement years were not the utopia that I had always believed. In fact, for many it was the worst stage of their lives. Not only did they had to deal with higher expenses health wise, but they were ill prepared to confront life at an age where they could not be as productive as before.

It was then that I realized I had to do something to help seniors with the single most important underlying problem they faced at retirement. Their financial situation was at the epicenter of their troubles. Financial situations oftentimes lead seniors to be stressed and get sick more often. Financial situation was the number one cause of getting seniors abused and evicted out of their homes because they couldn’t afford their mortgage. Financial situation affected the family around the seniors, that had to dedicate part of the time or sometimes, most of the time taking care of them.

In 2013, I decided to start Financial One Group. This company was created out of the need that I had identified among senior citizens. Our goal is to help seniors live the best quality of life possible at retirement. Our approach is simple. We look at a senior’s overall financial situation and assess ways in which we can help them through specialized financial programs geared to people ages 62+.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting your own business is never easy. I had to sacrifice in many aspects to achieve my goal. Particularly, I had to go back to study and pass different licensing and examinations to provide the services I wanted. Then I gambled my savings to start this business. It has had ups and downs but the curve is continuously slanting upward. To me that is my biggest satisfaction.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
I was born in a city called Barranquilla in northern Colombia. I had a blessed childhood as my parents could afford a comfortable lifestyle for our family. We come from a big family and family values have been instilled in us early on. We respect our elders and care for them.

As far as myself, I consider myself very outgoing and sociable. I enjoy the traveling, nice cars, watches, wines and a good cigar. When I’m not working I spend a lot of time with my three daughters and wife in the beach or serving in different boards helping our community.
