Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramon Garcia.
Ramon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Stand-up Comedy in 2004, just six months after being honorably discharged from the Navy. I quickly made a name for myself as one of the upcoming acts in South Florida. The Improv’s of South Florida (Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale & Miami) were my stomping grounds where I honed my craft.
I worked at the club during the day and then I hosted the shows at night. I worked seven days a week. At one point I could bet with certainty that I had more stage time than any comic in the state, including headliners. I heard that stage time was the only way to get better so I made it my mission to have as much stage time as I could and the dividends are still paying out to this day.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the beginning, it was a smooth road. I could sustain a set-off of my performance and stage presence alone. But as you learn quickly in stand-up it’s about the material. The performance is the icing on the cake. And since I was such an introvert it was difficult for me to open up about certain topics. Like my father’s piece for example. It’s a 20-minute chunk of material now but it took me seven years into stand-up before I could talk about him.
Backstory my father passed three days before my 18th Birthday. It rocked my world and like a lot of us, I suppressed a lot fo those feelings. I decided one day it was time to talk about him and the impression flowed through me like a river. The audience loved it! Two ladies after the show made it a point to compliment that bit and they were shocked when I told it was the first time I had shared it. It was so spot on it made my mom do a double-take when I was playing it back in the kitchen.
I get to exercise my suppressed feelings with honest expression and entertain audiences with the process. It’s a therapy for both parties involved.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Today I’m writing and preparing for a brand new hour stand-up special. When I’m not on the road working on my set, I’m home going on auditions, writing scripts, teaching classes, anything to keep me around my craft. Having a day job is necessary to survive, so if you can supplement that money with an industry job, it works all the better.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My dream is to star in Blockbuster Movies and Stand-up Specials! I love the feeling of knowing I’ve entertained and audience. It’s special to me. I smile all the time when I think about it, I get to tell jokes.
