Today we’d like to introduce you to Parrish Dove.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Maven of creativity and connoisseur of self-mastery. Truly artistic by nature. A Jacksonville, FL native, I began drawing and writing at the same stage of development. Ever since my adolescent stage, I have been passionate about illustration and using various mediums to create 3D & 2D compositions. This expression of passion was my first look into entrepreneurship. My fellow classmates would pay me in lunch money for custom graffiti-esque name tags for their desks. In my teenage years, I began to fuse my illustrative style with my love for fashion. I was hand painting and drawing characters for teammates, classmates, and even church members. Once I began to journey deeper into retail, I began to develop a more authentic point of view. I went to Florida Atlantic University to study Marketing and Graphic design. This is when my style as a creative really started to evolve. I went from illustrating to making primarily digital art. I was aiming to create visuals that embodied 3D movie posters. I was getting a major buzz on my campus. I started getting requests to do flyers for a plethora of events and cover art designs for music projects. All the while, I was experimenting with tailoring and alterations. My mom passed off her old Singer sewing machine to me, and I got practice by thrifting for classic pieces and giving them a more modern cut and fit. The clothing aesthetic eventually morphed into “Spiffy,” bespoke artwear. I am currently looking to release a spring collection in 2019. While preparing for this new collection, I have been apprenticing a master tailor. I have been steadily submitting commissions for artists and customers who request graphic designs. As the creative director of my own brand “P.Dove Creates,” I am developing a unique story to tell. My quest for enlightenment and journey of self-mastery has guided me to discovering some very obscure truths and has inspired new concepts that I look forward to sharing. As a man of color, I desire to share my heritage in a way that is authentic and inspires everyone to think. I heavily uphold the elements of folktale, mythical lore, psychedelia, and the grungy zing of the punk culture. Ultimately, my mission is to be a light to youths who need a mentor or figure in the creative realm and inspire them to refine their God-given gifts into an auspicious way of life.
Please tell us about your art.
Some say that I am a jack of all trades. I consider myself a “creative enthusiast” or “graphic lightworker”. Primarily, I do digital graphic designs in the form of logos, flyers, cover art, social media content, t-shirt designs, and animated graphics as well. My inspiration for designing stems from many sources. I love movie posters, street art, classic signage, & Swedish typography. I often mix minimal & street art styles, both modern and vintage. For the past six years, I have been studying the sartorial world of bespoke designing. I primarily tailor menswear, and I also create my own custom sewing patterns. My mother has been a seamstress my whole life, as the youngest child of four, I am her successor. My mother’s dream as a teenager was to be a fashion designer, and through me, she has the ability to make her dream a reality. I create with a purpose. I want to highlight elements of mystery and mysticism and reinterpret them in an elevated way that is influenced by my heritage and the black diaspora. I aim to expound on the neglected influences of blackness in the presence of the classic Americana narrative. I aspire to stimulate a conversation that surpasses the patronizing redundant infatuation of February festivity. My mission is to create magic from the mundane
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
There are two elements that cure loneliness; fellowship and getting out of your comfort zone. I find that many places that aid and support artists in the community are often hubs of like-minded individuals. In these hubs, I meet other creative geniuses who are often inclined to trade services or gather in support of favored exhibitionist. With social media at our fingertips, local collectives of almost any niche interest are but a Google search away. Take a friend & explore something new. Get inspired
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Currently, I display my designs online through my social media platforms and my personal website. One day, I hope to have my work on display on a billboard in Time Square, New York City, New York.
