Today we’d like to introduce you to Paige Romans.
Paige, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In high school, I played basketball and participated in cheerleading. During the Basketball season, there was a lot of cardio conditioning. I loved the game and the hustle. When it came to cheering leading for competition I was a base for the pyramid. To keep up with the momentum of picking up the girls, I decided to lift weights. Everything I decided to do, I always put more than 100% towards it.
My first year at Florida A&M University, I joined an organization called Divas Dance Team and become one of the Dance Captains Choreographing routines for major shows presented on campus. I enjoyed the life of dancing so much I wanted to take it a step further. I got certified as a personal trainer and fitness instructor. I started instructing Caribbean fitness classes at different gyms until I finally got my own location. The idea of using Soca music came from my carnival experiences. Soca brings a hypnotizing rhythm that just makes you feel good and want to dance. From my athletic upbringing to my love for dancing, Soca Fitness was founded. A class that consists of cardio and weights.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Getting certified was my first struggle. I was working two jobs, studying for my degree and studying for my certification. Sometimes I would have to cancel classes because my energy was too low; my body was weak. I struggled with keeping consistent classes. I wanted to offer so much more to my fitness classes but I was afraid of letting go of my 9-5 job. I had many nights where I had to sit down and reevaluate exactly what I am doing in my life. I need to find an order, some kind of balance. I changed my diet and gained energy. I created a schedule to manage both of my studies and passed my test and graduated college. I decided to take a leap of faith and leave my 9-5 job, now I have time to offer more to my fitness group.
Please tell us about Soca Fitness.
Soca Fitness is a high intensity cardio dance class for Men and Woman that consist of waistline movement, lifting weights to tone your muscles while burning calories. I teach others how to move their waistline in a circular motion. I teach members how to increase their endurance by joining my class. I specialize in weight lifting. I am known for my energy, they call me “the energizer bunny”. What makes me proud about my company is that strangers become friends. I encourage my members to get to know each other because we are all on a fitness journey. Class becomes a comfortable link up when you have a friend to share the energy with. What sets me apart from others is that my class also consists of weights, its not just a dance class. Using weights in class will open doors for the few that does not know how to use weights.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I believe everything happened the way it should’ve. If I had to start over, I would have left my 9-5 job without hesitation. You have to be able to give 100% focus on what you love to do. I missed out on a few opportunities holding on to my 9-5 job.
