Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Teran.
Oscar, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Venezuela, where I had a fun and loving childhood. At 15 years old I started working at a local news TV station (Promar TV) and radio and I even landed a Radio Show. After graduating from high school I moved to Miami in 1999 and studied film and video production at the Art Institute. Few months after I landed the internship of my dreams, working at MTV Latin America.
The next eight years where filled with hardworking adventures including three Unplugged’s (La Ley, Alejandro Sanz, Ricky Martin), 12 Video Music Awards and plenty of rewarding business and life lessons. Including accidentally stepping over Paulina Rubio’s foot and having Brigitte Nielsen say hi to me by grabbing me and putting her boobies on my face (true story).
In 2007 following my entrepreneurship dreams MTV I co-produced an indie film called Mancora, it was the first Peruvian film accepted into Sundance Film Festival. Then the Financial Crisis hit us all!!! I decided to make a bold move (LITERALLY) and moved to Beijing, China to pursue an MBA. Living, traveling and absorbing Asian Culture for two years and a half was one of the best experiences that I have ever lived up to this day (xie xie). After my Chinese adventures were done, I came back to Miami in 2012 looking for a fresh start when my good friend, Diego Ojeda from Rilea Group (Gracias Diego!), introduced me in into the Real Estate World.
Soon after I got my Real Estate License I started selling residential property left and right. Not having a Sales background ,coming from different industries and working environments, I found that my past gave me the right tools for this new challenge. Suddenly everything clicked. I went out batting with all I had. on my first year I sold more than 17 Million Dollars and over the last seven years, my team and I, proudly have sold more than 300 Million Dollars worth of properties. Additionaly we have been awarded for six years in a row top sales agent at our broker Avanti Way Realty.
While selling properties, I founded in 2014 a Development Business named TAAO Group which currently it’s developing 48 Townhomes in Orlando and different luxury single-family homes in Miami. At the same time acquiring multifamily buildings (we just bought our first 88 unit multifamily in St. Petersburg, yeahhh!). I run both of my businesses from my office at Coral Way 22nd Ave where I have a team of rock stars and business partners working day and night, side by side, and we continue growing and learning as we go.
With success comes also responsibility. In 2014, my team and I pledged to donate every year from our real estate proceeds to a nonprofit very close to my heart, TECHO. A wonderful organization that works on building homes and transforming slums into thriving communities across Latin America. Over the last six years and with the help from clients, business colleagues, family and friends our donations have helped build more than 20 homes. Our goal is to continue working together towards a Poverty-Free-World. We can do this!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t it, however, it’s been a road well worth it where at every stage there is something to learn. One of the biggest struggles was having to change people’s perceptions that to success you have to come from a specific background or industry. The past does not dictate the future. I’m a big fan of being able to reinvent yourself. You have to believe you can do it, and give you new venture everything you got! It’s not how you start, it how you finish.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Focus on results and prove your business plan with small wins along the way. Try to keep things as lean as possible. Remember cash flow is king. Don’t set up an office, don’t spend on things you don’t need to survive. Small operations. Lean, lean, lean business. Prove your product or service before spending too much time on seeking perfection. You can always perfect along the way. Start. Test. Adjust. Grow.
