Meet Oliver Glave of NBC Universal – Telemundo Enterprises in Doral

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oliver Glave.

Oliver, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved to Florida in December 2014. I lived for a couple of years in Boca Raton but in 2016 I moved again, this time to South Beach, where I currently reside. Before coming to the US, I worked for several digital media companies in the United Kingdom, mostly doing digital marketing related to the SEO field, video editing, and social media analytics. Needless to say, the change in the way of living between the two countries was kind of a shock at the beginning. Getting used to having sun pretty much the whole year could be really challenging, specially if you consider yourself more of a seasonal person. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg. With every change of place you have to reframe your brain, restarting your life, finding new connections and friends who share your same interests, and who can make yourself feeling a little bit more like home. However, the Latin connection here in Miami plays a big role in making yourself feeling comfortable. As soon as I got here, I knew that I had found a new family, a family composed of people from all Latin America; Mexicans, Venezuelans, Colombians, Puerto Ricans…

Job-wise, I couldn’t have been more fortunate. Just a couple of months after landing here, I managed to find a job in one of the most important TV networks for Spanish speaking people. I have been working there since then, mostly as a digital video producer, involved with apps for video streaming and video content. A lot of things to learn on a daily basis, and a lot of responsibility, specially if you work with live events. But finding a place where you feel like you belong, pushes you to give your best, and even more, every single day.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not a smooth road at all! In regards to my work, there are tons of things to learn in a very fast-paced environment. Never a dull moment. Working in live-streaming video requires your full attention, as well as being connected, informed and on top of things pretty much 24/7. Could be quite a challenge, specially if you’re not used to be wired all the time, but once you get used to it, the rush and the enjoyment of doing what you love, keeps you good to go, pretty much all the time!

Adapting to the culture here was a little bit of a predicament as well. There are so many mixed cultures revolving in Miami, all of them with their own idiosyncrasies, that finding where exactly you fit exactly among all can be a little tricky. Specially when you had spent a few years in an extremely different rhythm, as the British. But, as I mentioned before, once you find your people, everything becomes easier.

Tell us more about your work. What should we know? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from others?
I’m a digital video producer for NBC Universal – Telemundo Enterprises. I particularly focus on video streaming for mobile apps; pretty much everything from scheduling resources to the overall user experience related to live video, Full Event Replays and VOD. Working here has given me a real sense of belonging to something bigger, to one of the most important media corporations in the world, which is something I’m really proud of. The drive that people has in this company is an example to follow for any other major enterprise in the field. I’m also a published writer (in Spanish), with two poetry books under my name, both of which were pretty well received at the time of their publication. I’m currently working on a third book, comprised of both poetry and short poetic stories about Brighton. With a little luck, it might see the light next year!

What is your favorite childhood memory?
One of the memories that I treasure the most are my trips to San Bartolo, a beach half an hour away, south of Lima. My family used to rent a house there, for the whole duration of the summer. I always thought of this, as a place lost in space and time, perfect for meeting new friends, surfing, or any kind of adventure for that matter. So many different worlds in such a small resort. I truly remember this beach as endless.
