Meet Nancy Iannitelli in Naples

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Iannitelli.

Nancy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Framingham, Massachusetts in 1950. At 15, I studied with a well-known portrait painter using oils with an Old World Masters aesthetic. At 16, I received a grant to study at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and shortly after I attended the Vesper George School of Art where I began defining my own personal style.

Springboarding from my work, painting still life, photo-realistic portraits and landscapes, I began the movement into the impressionistic/abstract style I paint into this day.

Presently, my style is varied and broad. I’ve tried to integrate my life’s experience into my work and at this point, it seems to make sense to me to create paintings on large scale, abstract, minimal and expressionist genres.

My work is shown in galleries both domestic and international and is sought after by collectors worldwide.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Looking back now, having had the opportunity to attend a commercial art school, taking summer workshops and studying with other well-known artists gave me the foundation to develop myself. I was a mother at age 22, opened a business and earned my way as a Salon owner and hairstylist to support myself and my son. I never stopped experimenting with different mediums, painting, drawing, pastels, watercolor, clay, sculpting in stone, stained glass, but knew my vision as a fine artist and painter would eventually be my destiny. Once my son headed off to college, I moved to SWF in 1991.

In Florida, my work evolved and blossomed and I finally truly came into my own as an expressionist abstract artist. Then, in 2011, I built a 500 sq ft art studio addition to my villa and was able to work on larger pieces which finally led to me being noticed by gallery owners and beginning to show in fine art galleries.

I have enjoyed every step of the way as an upcoming artist and am grateful for the recognition I have received. Recently, I have been invited to show in the prestigious Cage Gallery in Barcelona.

Please tell us more about your work, what do you specialize in and most proud of.
I specialize in expressionist abstracts on large canvas and wood surfaces using a style of application that is my own and that evolved over time. My work is different from many conventional painters in that I experiment with the paint medium and the way in which it is applied to the canvas. There is a sense of spontaneity and life my work achieves as I allow the liquid and free-flowing paint to organically dance and cover the various surfaces I work with. This distinguishes itself from my early work using the more traditional paint to brush to canvas method.

Each piece that I create has thought and direction and my pieces are created at a very fast pace. One of the most frequent questions I am asked is about as viewers study and experience my sometimes complicated yet swift stroked work is, “How long did it take you to paint this life-size painting”? My answer is always, “My whole life”!

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
Becoming my own contractor and building my art studio, I was able to take part in the Artists Studio Tour curated by Artis Naples. This tour of different artists studios in Naples Florida made it possible for over 500 art lovers to view and appreciate my work, both in my home and studio. Watching as people experienced my artwork and seeing the reactions they had to my body of work was a very proud moment for me.
