Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Espinoza.
Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It was in high school that I came across a journalism class and, with my mother and father having both worked in television news in Peru, it felt like the right move.
Journalism eventually led me to TV Production in which I was able to produce and create short films for our high school morning show. Going straight into Miami Dade College, I sort of knew which path I wanted to take with my career.
Studying film production, I learned the basic in and outs of life on set, but it still wasn’t anywhere near what I needed to fortify my education. I needed real-world experience behind a camera. I found myself interning for Miami New Times, filming events and editing content for their social media platforms.
After the internship, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I began freelancing, taking on multiple projects with numerous clients that opened doors to new connections. Everyone who starts to do event videography finds themselves in a niche, and I love that mine became weddings.
With my own company and the best network of people I can ask for, you can still find me behind the camera today, and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The most difficult part of all this has been starting and managing a business. I started creating films for fun until I realized I could turn it into a career, which of course is when the challenges began. I began filming many events, and that then led me to film weddings, and those are a whole different ball game.
Weddings require you to be a great wedding. It takes planning, coordination, and good communication with your team and the couple. The first wedding I ever did under Melsfilms I was a nervous wreck, so much that I couldn’t sleep the night before.
I’ve learned so much since then, and I love that I continue to learn as no event is ever the same. Now I manage my own business, and that has given me the opportunity to meet and develop relationships with many vendors and videographers. It’s definitely a struggle at the beginning, but if I’m honest, it’s totally worth it.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Melsfilms – what should we know?
I’m a wedding and event videographer based in South Florida. I love getting to capture all aspects of film, so what better way than to film both weddings and events, they honestly compliment each other. When it comes to events, I love showing the energy and atmosphere of each party.
I take that idea and film weddings with the same passion. I love showing the energy of each couple and their chemistry throughout their special day. I try to make sure each couple is comfortable and true to themselves. Showing a couples chemistry and the family love for them is what I strive for.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel having a positive attitude has been the most important characteristic leading to where I am today. When filming events and weddings, you are surrounded by a lot of people with a lot on their mind.
You have to keep focus on what you want to show in the final edit no matter what goes on the day of. Having a positive attitude amongst your crew will always leave you feeling accomplished and excited for the next event to come.
