Meet Meadow Gerrish of Meadow Collective in Pinecrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meadow Gerrish.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Meadow. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I went to school for fashion design. As soon as I finished school, I started a sustainable clothing line.. I had the clothing line for about 8 or 9 years. In that time, I moved to Costa Rica with my husband with the dream to live completely sustainable on a farm, grow our own food, and ride horses for transportation. In the midst of this project, I had my clothing line. I rented a little space in my tiny little town called Pavones to be my studio space because I had no other way to deal with my wholesale clients who were mostly in the USA. People in the USA don’t understand that you couldn’t respond because your living with no electricity.

So I rented the shop… mostly sold my line and added some other brands I felt had the same sustainable, handmade values and Meadow Collective was born. Eventually I let the clothing line go because I really wanted to stay in Costa Rica more full time and the clothing line could never allow that. My shop just kept growing along with this amazing community of all these super incredible free-spirited women from all around the world. The shop’s life has always just flowed for me. It allows me to create space and use my creativity in a way that brings balance to my work life. My family had to move back to Miami due to a number of life circumstances.. but that’s another story. Now back in Miami, my hometown from childhood, I opened this shop in Pinecrest that is a bohemian lifestyle dream. Everything is made by hand, ethically produced, focused on preserving crafting cultures and wellness.

Has it been a smooth road?
This shop in Pinecrest has been so smooth and in the flow! That’s not saying it hasn’t been hard work because it has. My climb to this shop has been a long and bumpy road yes for sure! But I think that was mostly because of me trying to remain gypsy between Costa Rica and Miami. The day I made the commitment to open this new shop in Miami, it has been nothing but great truly. Hard work… oh yeah… but it feels great to finally be in a work position that I feel completely driven to grow and feel the fruits of my labor everyday. So grateful to this community you don’t even know.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Meadow Collective story. Tell us more about the business.
I am mostly proud to support mostly women-owned businesses. I support a huge umbrella of makers, crafters, small designers… mostly women all living their dreams through their passions! That feels amazing! I’m helping to preserve traditions that have been passed down for generations… that just gets me all excited! I am rebelling against the mass-produced plastic society and trying to educate people about where their goods come from. Teaching them to ask who made everything they buy. I am a part of the makers movement and fashion revolution to help people make better more sustainable choices.

Not only are we all about the craft of handmade but we use only sustainable packaging. Every purchase gets a reusable cloth bag. Our tissue paper is made from recycled paper, our mailers are 100% biodegradable. We believe in the sustainable lifestyle through and through and want to help our community learn to live more sustainably.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I believe my industry is becoming more educated about sustainability and the entire supply chain. I have seen in the last year so many brands moving towards sustainable materials and packaging. I see the consumer buying more based on quality and consciousness. Fast fashion is out!
