Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc Ettensohn.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Marc. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I graduated from The University of Louisville School of Medicine and completed general psychiatry training at The University of Florida School of Medicine where I served as Administrative Chief Resident and Resident Representative to The Institutional Graduate Medical Education Committee. I was awarded The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) Senior Resident Administrative Fellowship and I continue to serve on an ABPN committee that seeks to improve the process by which psychiatrists are tested for maintenance of certification. In 2016, I started working for Ketamine Treatment Centers which recently changed its name to Actify Neurotherapies.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Psychiatry can be a challenging specialty because although medications help most people, there are many treatment-resistant patients. In particular, depression is of great concern given the high incidence in our population. About one-third of patients treated with antidepressants or psychotherapy do not respond. It can be difficult to find other options. Although, ketamine is not FDA-approved for treating depression, it it FDA-approved for anesthesia and has been around for decades, and thus, we know about its time-tested safety profile. Given ketamine’s response rate is about 70%, ketamine is a great alternative treatment for depressed patients who have failed multiple treatments. In animal models, we can see real structural changes in the brain as early as 24 hours after treatment!
Actify Neurotherapies – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Actify Neurotherapies is a nationwide mental health practice that improves lives through the safe delivery of researched, proven, and innovative treatments such as ketamine infusions. As a psychiatrist working in this practice, I am proud to be on the cutting edge, while still being able to practice evidence-based medicine. Dr. Levine, CEO and founder of Actify Neurotherapies, has established 10 centers across the country since 2011. The psychiatrists and anesthesiologists of Actify Neurotherapies have safely treated more than 1,500 patients with 15,000 ketamine infusions.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment came after a patient told me that I saved his life. As one of my first patients to be treated with ketamine, he had tried nearly every type of treatment beforehand. I was and still am proud to defend the use of ketamine for mental health despite some, although lessening criticisms. Medicine is like anything else – sometimes it takes a while for new things to be accepted, even if they work exceptionally well with low risk. Academic centers and the National Institute of Mental Health are continuing to gather data which thus far has supported ketamine’s use for treatment-refractory depression.
