Meet Maika Luongo of eat.sweat.live.healthy in Palmetto Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maika Luongo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Maika. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Before really starting my nutrition career I always knew that I wanted my own private practice, but I wanted good solid experience and education before taking on my own clients. I started off working at Beth Israel Medical Center in NYC and from there I advanced my career to NYU Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital and then Tufts Medical Center in Boston. It took almost 10 years of inpatient care from pediatrics to adults to finally feel like I was ready to build what I had worked so hard on to create a solid foundation of nutrition knowledge and understanding.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a relatively smooth road albeit a slow one! I worked very hard to get to where I am today and I never took “no” for an answer. It made me work harder.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about eat.sweat.live.healthy – what should we know?
I am a small business, private practice. I see clients in the comfort of their own homes or in a neutral setting such as Starbucks (whichever is most comfortable and convenient for them). I specialize in weight loss, sports nutrition, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A lot of my clients are very active and I can relate as exercise is a huge part of my life. I grew up playing soccer; I have run 4 marathons and 10 half marathons and I am an indoor cycling instructor so I know the importance of fueling your body properly for performance.

I’m proud of the ups and downs. They both have helped shape me and my practice.

What sets me apart is extensive background and great education. I am relatable, a friend (not here to judge nor a dictator). I understand that life isn’t perfect and we’re not perfect, but the important thing is how we go about things in life that make us successful (I do a lot of coaching, motivation and encourage positive thinking).

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My co-workers at every single hospital! Especially my co-workers and supervisor at my first hospital: Beth Israel Medical Center. I walked in that hospital knowing NOTHING, but they believed in me and had the patience to teach me everything I know.
