Today we’d like to introduce you to Luna Medina-Wolf.
Luna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey with therapy started as a young child receiving the support of a social worker through difficult times. Already then, at the age of 16, I realized I wanted to become a therapist when I grew up. Many years passed and at the age of 27, I was finally able to attend college and pursue my education path to become a therapist. I started my journey as a therapist during my internship in grad school. I was interning at a substance abuse facility and fell in love with the industry. I always knew I wanted to work with trauma survivors, I just didn’t know that I’ll find such a passion working with people who are struggling with an addiction – abtrauma by itself. After working almost five years in that industry, I realized that unless I ran my own facility I will run into things that are being done well below my standards. As much as I advocated for my clients, my hands were tied. Then I decided, it was time to open my own private practice where I’ll be able to make my own decisions and help anybody and everyone I can to the best of my ability without bureaucratic constraints.
Has it been a smooth road?
Pursuing my education as a young person with no savings or anyone to help me was never easy. During my B.A., studies I worked three jobs to pay for college. It was tough but really rewarding to know that I managed to do it all on my own and without any accumulation of debt. Once I opened my practice, one of the biggest struggles I’ve had were to stay motivated in the first year and a half. When starting a private practice, it takes time until the community era to know you and your name becomes known. Networking was not my strong side but, I had to push myself to do it so I can promote myself and create a larger referral network.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Helping Moon Counseling P.A. story. Tell us more about the business.
Helping Moon Counseling PA is a counseling company. I provide individual, couples and family therapy. I have a strong background working with individuals struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues (i.e. anxiety, depression, anger). I am EMDR ( Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) and TIR (Trauma incident reduction) therapy trained to specialize as a trauma specialist. I am also experienced in working with people experiencing a disability. I am a licensed mental health counselor, a certified rehabilitation counselor and a master certified addiction professional. I think that what makes my company stand out are a combination of things. One is the fact, that I am highly motivated and passionate about my field. I go above and beyond for my clients and for me going to work is the most exciting thing I can do. It motivates me to wake up in the morning and start my day knowing that I’m going to help people achieve their goals and make changes in their lives. When I see a change happen during trauma healing session, I can get goosebumps all over my body. Second, I am one of those therapist that if I don’t think the client is a good match for me, I will make sure to help them find a different therapist. Third, I utilize holistic approach in my treatment. I use essential oils, guided meditation, relaxation techniques and music.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
I think my proudest moment so far, has been when I got a call for a potential new client and when I told them that I’m currently not taking new clients but I can refer them to somebody else they said, “ I heard such amazing things about you that I prefer waiting than being referred out.”
