Meet Ligia Carabarin-Amiguet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ligia Carabarin-Amiguet.

Hi Ligia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
BORRI began with my desire to express. When I was in high school, I explored art in any capacity. My days were spent painting, sculpting, or knitting anything that allowed me expression. The opportunity to make music with a band presented itself to me, and soon music became another extension of my artistry. After the band, I wanted to maintain my practice and formed BORRI. My small haven where I kept my music protected and nourished. BORRI is every part of Miami as it is me. She was created as an ultimate outlet for my solitude in this city. I’ve grown fondness for Miami through her and Miami has found a small place in it for me with BORRI. Studying away from Miami, my experimentation took different renditions. I explored and experimented more and formed a stronger base for my practice. Throughout that, BORRI was like coming home for the holidays. I would say hello to my friends, I would go to the beach, and I would sing. Now having moved back to here, I settle back into BORRI. I don’t know what’s in store for her but I keep my promise in my care for BORRI as well as my exploration in art.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was confusing not understanding fully what BORRI was to me as I grew distant from Miami. Every time I came back and performed I exclaimed at the end of my set, “This will be BORRI’s last show. She can’t go on.” And yet when asked to perform again, I would agree without hesitation. I was lucky enough to have Houndstooth Cottage always supporting me since the inception of BORRI. They brought about a space where I could foster and grow through my music. Their presence was reassuring and a big reason why I continued to perform. I’m still trying to understand.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a multidisciplinary artist. BORRI is an extension of that. My music is a rhythmic drone of storytelling.

What matters most to you? Why?
My home, my community, my passions. I want to take care of them and have them grow and be beautiful.
