Today we’d like to introduce you to Krysta Monet.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I originally started my venture as a publicist working for Track and Field superstar, Justin Gatlin. I knew nothing about public relations at the time but I did know how to brand and market a product to its full potential. Justin saw a gift in me and approached with the opportunity to help re-brand his career image which I hesitantly agreed to. One thing led to another and within just a few months I was chatting with editors of major magazines, pushing new client contracts, and networking at the NFL draft under a new title. Things were moving fast for me at its own pace. At that time, all I had to do was learn to keep up.
Has it been a smooth road?
A lot may have believed this whole thing came naturally to me, but to be completely honest I struggled very badly in the beginning. I’ve written novels, I’ve sold subscription boxes, I’ve built websites…anything you can possibly think of I’ve done it and most of the time succeeded. This was a whole different playing field. When I say different I mean completely different. I had no clue what went into the basic steps of public relations and I was doing it on a much larger platform. Add that in with the fact that I also knew absolutely nothing about sports. Every angle of this was brand new to me. People I personally knew went to school for years and studied hard with the dream to be in the position I fell into. That person wasn’t me. I didn’t go to college and working alongside pro athletes was never my dream. I sometimes felt I was robbing someone of their own dreams and hard work just because I happen to be at the right place at the right time. I remember telling my mother that this was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. But I was doing it. Not just doing it, I was doing it well. The only person I had to rely on if I failed was myself, so failure wasn’t an option. I was given an opportunity of a lifetime to create something amazing… and that’s exactly what I did.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Nine and North – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Crazy how something you never saw yourself doing in a million years becomes the only thing you can see yourself doing for the rest of your life. My business may have started out in the world of pro sports but it has taken me into so many open doors that allowed me to create a lane of my own. Today, not only do I continue working on the brands of my pro athlete clients, my company has a separate category which provides PR services for lifestyle experts in healthcare, beauty, fashion, and more. The division also has an extended category by the name of “Play NINE” that caters to businesses in the adult industry from product companies to certified sexologist.
Each division of Nine and North fills me in a completely different way. Sports is always going to be special to me because that’s where it all started. It’s the root to what I was able to stem from that blossomed into a beautiful passion I never knew I had. I learn so much working with my lifestyle clients. They are all extremely knowledgeable in their fields. I thought my love life was doing fine until I heard my client, who is a licensed relationship therapist, speaking in an interview that had me questioning the last two years of my life. And that time we were working on a piece for Cosmopolitan magazine featuring quotes from my OBGYN client about the inner workings of the female body parts. Let’s just say, I thought I knew all there was to know about that area. Apparently, I was wrong.
A week at my desk is like speed reading through your favorite blog topics with a bomb attached to a timer on your wrist while your favorite song is playing in the background and the rest of the office is on fire. Just let the feelings and emotions of all of that sink in for a minute. No two days are ever the same, and I wouldn’t trade that daily feeling for anything in the world.
What are you striving for, what criteria or markers have you set as indicators of success?
I’ve always believed that success is defined individually. To me, success is freedom. The freedom to take a sick day and not feel guilty about it. To travel the world and rely only on a decent WiFi connection to continue collecting income. There’s no better feeling than waking up each day excited to work. When you find that feeling of freedom, you are successful.
