Meet Kirsten Campbell of Roll Up and Paint

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirsten Campbell.

Kirsten, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started taking art seriously in 2017. I was going through a rough patch with my anxiety and I just needed an outlet to focus on. One of my brothers, who is also a dope digital artist, basically suggested that I start painting because, for him creating was relaxing. So I picked up a paintbrush and been creating ever since. I started doing digital art a lot more during the past couple of months because I wanted to try something new and now I love creating digital pieces as well. My biggest goal as an artist was to be able to showcase my art in Miami at Art Basel, that was amazing. I drove from Jersey to Miami, a total of 18 hours just to display my art in Miami. Thanks to Basel Bash Miami, I was able to do that.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a super smooth ride. Especially because I started a business so researching and finding things to add to my store can be stressful. But I still love it. Starting to sell my work and finding other ways to produce it besides on a canvas has been dope. I feel like I find something new I can produce for everyone to enjoy.

Please tell us about Roll Up and Paint.
Roll Up and Paint is just what I like to do. When I say “roll up and paint,” it really means to relax and create. My creativity usually depicts black women, my love for sneakers and my support of the cannabis community. I wanted everyone to feel like they could have a piece of what I create and I wanted everyone to feel those creative, chill, relaxing vibes. So I started to specialize in creating canvas and poster prints. I wanted people who could not get my original hand-painted canvases to still feel like they can have my art. I think I am most proud of that aspect because I found a way for everyone to collect a Roll Up and Paint piece. I think the vibrancy of my unique color schemes with the content I choose to paint or draw kind of sets me apart from other artists.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start from the beginning, I would probably start off being a digital artist before I started painting. Just to learn better drawing techniques before I execute an idea on a canvas.
