Meet Karen Rifas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Rifas.

Karen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Always interested in art. Began taking classes at Miami-Dade College, Kendall Campus, in the late 1970s. Took classes after that at FIU and University of Miami, then returned to the University of Miami in the 1980s for my BFA and MFA. Since then, I have taught at University of Miami, Miami-Dade College and more than 20 years at New World School of the Arts.

My first gallery association was with Gloria Luria Gallery, Kane Concourse, Bay Harbor Island, and am presently associated with Emerson Dorsch Gallery in Little Haiti. I have exhibited at numerous public venues in Miami and recently complete a one-person exhibit at The Bass Museum, Miami Beach.

Has it been a smooth road?
I have been fortunate to have opportunities at most stages of my art making to be able to exhibit at various venues. There have been numerous mentors along the way that have encouraged me to keep working and growing.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I have gone through many stages throughout the years – from bronze casting to installations, to politically motivated work, to the drawing and painting that I am presently combining with installation.

Do you feel like there are certain traits that increase the likelihood of success?
Work, Work, Work
