Meet Justin “Justus” Grey of Firm Music in Fort Lauderdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Grey.

Justin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story started when I attended a friend’s party four years ago. The DJ asked me to monitor his set for a while and it was after selecting a few songs that night that my love for music began. In the following months, my friend, DJ Karbon and I bought some DJ equipment and started practicing and mixing music almost everyday. We got our first booking six months later at a Sweet 16 birthday party.

The DJ from the party I attended, DJ Karbon and myself decided to form a DJ group called Protek Sound and I became the group’s MC and Public Relations Manager. After one year, DJ Karbon and I transitioned to another music group called Firm Music and I have been with them for the past three years. Throughout this time, I have also pursued party promotions and became an event planner. My team and I have hosted events such as Gyal Fever, Mist Day Rave and Nympho Miami.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. There were times that DJ Karbon and I had little to no bookings because of how young we were entering the industry. Over time as we showcased our talents and skills, event promoters realized our potential and they were more willing to work with us. This has helped to build our brand and the reputation we have today.

Firm Music – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am one of the six members from Firm Music. We are a group of DJs/MCs that aim to provide a top tier musical experience and ensure patrons enjoy themselves whenever we play. We are known for bringing the vibes and energy to any event we play at. All the members of group are Jamaican and as such, we are deeply rooted in dancehall and the Caribbean culture. For this reason, most of our support is from the Caribbean community and we tend to get hired for such events. I am proud of the growth the company has encountered over the past year and I am looking forward to what’s next for us.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is having a career I love while leaving a positive impact on the people around me. I just want to be happy, healthy, financially comfortable while being able to do all the things I enjoy such as traveling and experiencing new things with my family and friends.
