Meet Jorge Larrea of 305 Magazine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Larrea.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jorge. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It started and continues for the love of the city of Miami and the people in it. I was a part of a great website in the early 2000’s (The305.com shouts to Dro), which evolved into producing a print magazine that represented the Miami we knew. The only game in town was the New Times and a few zines, but we were in our own lane. What set 305 Magazine apart from anything else were the themed photo-shoots with models and artists. We had the Scarface redux and Clockwork Orange themes for a couple of issues. We were blessed to have Miami’s own come out and be a part of what we were building. Not only getting a lot of local love on the streets but from artists and celebrities.

Our first issue (2006) was with Pitbull on the cover. Rick Ross graced our second issue and DJ Khaled, Udonis Haslem, DJ Laz and no matter who we featured, their story was one of determination, a Miami trait that’s in our DNA. Every interview was like being with someone from the neighborhood, in their studio in their own vibe.
The back of a lot of trucks hit the floor. Then it happened… Once the iPad dropped the landscape of media consumption changed. The world went digital, so we did too 305Magazine.com, and although there have been a lot of changes throughout the years, my goal and motivation have remained the same. I do it for the love of the city of Miami. Being surrounded by like-minded individuals is also a huge help. I have to say I’m lucky to have worked with some talented people Eddie Valdes @OTBMiami & William Livesay @lmg_willy & Jen @Jensenphotography = dope photographers. There are a lot of people that have assisted and contributed to 305 Magazine. I appreciate everyone.

Fast forward, 305 Magazine dove into the world of podcasting in 2019 with 305 Radio with myself and Andrea Mavares (Dre Mav productions) and the occasional appearance by William Livesay. We have interviewed some great humans that reside in the 305. I’m proud of what’s been done and where it’s going. You can listen to 305 Radio anywhere you listen to music online Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, etc. Search 305 Radio on your favorite app or site.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been under construction longer than the 836 has! I’ve had my fair share of struggles and roadblocks. I try not to talk about or focus on hardships, but I will say that they don’t last.

Please tell us about 305 Magazine.
305 Magazine is about Miami, South Florida, from the inside out. Focused on the people and culture in it. We don’t focus on one thing. The site is our main hub for the event, sports news, local news, comedy, exclusive recaps, behind the scenes, event information and more. To focus on one particular thing in this city is boxing yourself into a tiny corner somewhere. We cover as much as possible and work to build with people in the city.

A few things I’m proud of: I’ve released a physical print and a digital issue of 305 Magazine, worked on a documentary about the Miami Graffiti scene before Wynwood and currently producing 305 Radio: A Miami Podcast. To be honest, I’m proud to still be around and always evolving; people fall off. The difference is simple; we’re not corporate people. We are Miami natives, we love the culture that is Miami. There isn’t a place in the world like this city. It’s not perfect but trust me, it’s the slice of cheesecake that’s really bad for you but so good, worth it. We do it out of love.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
A Miami childhood is usually different from most and it’s difficult to pinpoint one to share. I used to put together MC Battles in and was a part of the local Hip-Hop scene and those events were so dope for me. Being in the music scene was different back then almost like something out of a movie. There are so many things to do in Miami aside from clubbing like urban exploring and bonfires on the roof of a bomb shelter, etc… so many good memories. There are too many favorites to list, I couldn’t pick one.
