Today we’d like to introduce you to Jo Ann Irwin Diaz.
Jo Ann, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
A native of Ohio, I took a vacation in 1981 to South Florida and never left. Mesmerized by the sound of the ocean waves, rustling palm trees and year round enjoyable weather (minus hurricanes), I felt I belonged.
After many years as a surgical nurse in South Florida, it became apparent that people strive to look as youthful as they feel inside. My education and practice focus on medical aesthetics. The industry and advancements in the field have grown exponentially. Minimally invasive treatments including microneedling and micropigmentation bridge the gap between self-care and plastic surgery.
Sometimes, I am a therapist, sometimes I am a listener. But my treatment room become an oasis to those seeking refuge from skin ailments and issues. As part of a dedicated team, we collaborate using the latest technologies and treatments to keep south Floridians looking great. When you feel your best, your self esteem and confidence soar!
I’ve been around long enough to see a bit of everything in my practice, from life altering scars to those looking to stop the clock. Traditionally, women have been the most apt to seek my services. But, I am finding that men are becoming a significant demographic recently. When I am not working, I spend time with my husband Mark and a lovable rescued border collie with a great sense of humor. I also enjoy cultivating and releasing butterflies and culturing rare fruit trees.
Has it been a smooth road?
Building a solo skincare practice from the ground up had its challenges. The ebb and flow of seasonal residents calls for long hours in the winter and affords relaxing vacation time in the summer. But, our area is like a little bubble. When my colleagues around the country are complaining about the sluggish economy or harsh climates, Miami is a thriving metropolis with great opportunities for anyone willing to work for it!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Palm Beach Skincare story. Tell us more about the business.
Palm Beach Skincare grew from a private label skin and body care company. Innovations in products led to an interest in hands-on care. My surgical background attracted me to medical aesthetics and age management. Any more, it’s quite possible to look 10 years younger without spending a fortune.
Over the past few years, I have been working on a volunteer basis with severe burn scars, to improve the quality of life for those affected. One such case can be seen in www.theskingames.com/open-finalists where I have received national recognition for my work.
Seeing a need for quality education in south Florida, I have facilitated a training program, I teach experienced medical aestheticians how to perform delicate procedures including dermaplaning and microneedling.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The medical skincare industry is growing by leaps and bounds! North America has led the skincare device market worldwide in 2017. That includes everything from clinical lasers to home hair removal units. And by 2024, it is estimated to be a 180 BILLION dollar industry. Consumers purchased 1.5 billion dollars worth of skincare creams, serums and other products last year.
Why? Because we now have products and devices that are showing clinical evidence that they work. Patients are not coming to my office for ‘fluff-and-buff’ treatments anymore – they want that bang for their buck. And they are getting it!
