Meet Jill Oscar of Jill Oscar Makeup in South Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Oscar.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jill. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always been an artist. Oil painting is in my genes. My mother is also a fabulous artist. I also loved makeup. I was always enamoured and visually stimulated by all the colors and textures of makeup. However, I had to be realistic and work “regular” job. So, I went into sales and marketing. I sold everything from alarm systems to seafood. I guess I was pretty good at it because I always ranked pretty high. I was getting bored with my last job selling fish and that is when the lightbulb went on. Why couldn’t I sell myself? My skill set as a makeup artist came naturally so I started cold calling production companies until someone actually let me have a face to face meeting and the rest is history.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe you have to fail a few times before you can succeed. It has not been easy. I wish I stayed true to what I wanted in my career 20 years ago. I gave up on being a makeup artist and hadn’t picked a paintbrush up in 30 years. The fear of failure is real. I had to learn set etiquette and one of the biggest obstacles I had to learn was how to also style hair. As a freelance artist just starting out, I did not have any mentors or coaching or favors from anyone. This industry, your expected to do a few jobs for free to show your value before you get a paycheck.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jill Oscar Makeup – what should we know?
My business started with just me! I did and still do everything! I am a fanatic about how I can create a beautiful face and still look like themselves only better. I work on everyone from celebrity to luxury bridal. I am proud of where I have been with my company. I travel internationally for my business, I have also worked on the presidential debate and many famous faces. What sets me apart from everyone else is my humble and modest personality. I listen carefully to what the client wants and feels comfortable with.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband Robert Salles is the biggest supporter of my career. He encouraged me to start painting again and he is the one who told me to quit my sales job so, I can devote full time to the career of my dreams. My parents were always supportive of my growth as an artist. My mother gave me her talent.
