Meet Jessica Levison of Peekaboo Ice Cream in Surfside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Levison.

Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was practicing law for Legal Aid when I decided to venture into ice cream 10 years ago. At that time, I opened up my scoop shop, Serendipity Creamery in Surfside. For the first handful of years, I was practicing law full time while I also ran Serendipity full-time. When my first daughter was born 6 years ago, I left the practice law and dedicated myself completely to ice cream. It was shortly thereafter that Peekaboo Ice Cream (my newest venture) was born.

Peekaboo Ice Cream is my exciting new venture. In a nutshell, it is indulgent, super premium (CERTIFIED ORGANIC) ice cream that incorporates veggies that you cannot see or taste. I am launching with 4 conventional flavors (chocolate with hidden cauliflower, mint chip with hidden spinach, strawberry with hidden carrot and vanilla with hidden zucchini) and 1 fun flavor (cotton candy with hidden beet). The back story begins, as you might imagine, with kids (mine) that love ice cream but do not love veggies. The reality is that while we all know we need to eat veggies, most of us don’t get enough of them. So I thought – why not incorporate veggies into ice cream? Because, kids (and adults) deserve to be rewarded too, and ice cream is a great reward – even better when there are veggies in every bite.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I was able to work out all the kinks in the early years of operating Serendipity. I had the luxury of a full-time career apart from the business, so I was able to make mistakes from which I learned valuable lessons that have carried through to Peekaboo Ice Cream.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Peekaboo Ice Cream – what should we know?
We are a true innovator in frozen desserts. Peekaboo Ice Cream is the only certified organic, super indulgent ice cream with hidden veggies. I am so proud to make an ice cream that my kids beg for by name (“Peekaboo! Please!), even know that they know full well, it has veggies!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband has been everything in this process. Unconditionally supportive, encouraging, and excited. My kids, for being my taste-testers and my parents who will go to the moon and back for me – whether its picking up my kids from school when I am stuck in a business meeting, or grabbing dry ice for me to ship out samples to retailers.
