Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Jensen.
Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Movement has always been a part of my life. As a young girl, I spent countless hours at the dance studio perfecting my art form. This helped me to learn not only the significance of movement but the need to take care of my body!
I first practiced Pilates as part of my own rehab regimen following an accident resulting in a severely fractured vertebra. Following my own quick and lasting recovery, I became a firm believer in the STOTT PILATES® method. I knew I wanted to help others find the relief I now had! After intensive training at Pacific Northwest Pilates in Portland, Oregon, I became certified and went on to specialize in post-injury rehabilitation and other special conditions. I have always believed that a healthy body is a key to personal well-being. It has truly become my passion to help people live a happy, pain-free lifestyle. I believe that everyone, no matter what age or skill level can benefit from Pilates!
I’ve been seeing private and semiprivate clients at my studio since 2015. Modern Method Pilates just celebrated three years in business and I am looking forward to many more!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a business will always have its struggles. I have been very fortunate to have a lot of supporters and many people who believe in me. In this line of business, a lot of the clientele is built on referrals. It has taken some time to build up the wonderful clientele I currently have!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Modern Method Pilates story. Tell us more about the business.
Modern Method Pilates specializes in the STOTT PILATES® method- a contemporary approach to the original exercise method pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates. STOTT PILATES incorporates modern exercise principles, including contemporary thinking about spinal rehabilitation and athletic performance enhancement.
For example, some Pilates approaches may promote a flat back, whereas STOTT PILATES exercises are designed to restore the natural curves of the spine and rebalance the muscles around the joints. There is also more emphasis on scapular stabilization. As well, there are more preparatory exercises and modifications to cater to many different body types and abilities, making it possible for everyone to enjoy the benefits of Pilates!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would say that bad luck was what brought me to Pilates! If I hadn’t broken my back, I would never have been exposed to Pilates in the first place. So in a way, bad luck brought good luck!
