Meet Jessica Bergman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Bergman.

Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After beginning Crossfit in late 2009, it quickly became part of my life. The workouts and the community were the beginning of a fitness journey that would bring Downtown Strength and Conditioning to life almost ten years later.

My journey through Crossfit and Fitness in Miami was exciting and fun. It welcomed me to my new city and I was appreciative of the people who I was able to meet along the way.

After several years of Crossfit, I rediscovered my love for fitness. I began to compete in local competitions and branch out into adventure racing, Olympic Lifting and so many other exciting areas of fitness.

I was training Olympic Lifting and my coach offered me the opportunity to help grow and coach his new gym in Downtown; Crossfit Muscle Farm. I was excited!

I obtained my Crossfit Level 1 training Certificate and quickly began to love being able to give back through training others much like many of my coaches did for me.

After roughly four years of coaching, the opportunity to open my own gym presented itself. It was an opportunity I was grateful for, as I would be able to continue to grow our community here in Miami and the Muscle Farm team could continue and focus on the growth of their other location in Fort Lauderdale. We still continue to share a common goal of spreading fitness and community through both our gyms today.

We opened the doors of Downtown Strength & Conditioning (DTSC) in the Ingraham Building on October 1st, 2018.

When I say we, I mean the many athletes I had the opportunity to coach through the years. Our community literally showed up ready to help us move in and get the gym ready that final weekend prior to opening! it was crunch time and  after a weekend of moving, that Monday at 6 am our first official class went off without a hitch!

Finding the perfect spot  in Downtown for our home wasn’t an easy task for a gym like ours! We needed the right location, right size space and a place we knew we could call home for many years to come as Miami continues to grow around us.

For me, as a native Brooklyn, New Yorker one of the things that drew me to the historic Ingraham Building; where our gym resides, was its original bones and landmark features. This space felt special as soon as I walked in I knew we had to make it ours!

I wanted to capture fitness, but also the roots of Miami and appreciated the history and old Miami feel. Things really came together when I was able to commission Miami based artist team Chalk & Brush who did all of our murals hand painted to give the gym the right mix of old meets new and my vision of the perfect gym came alive.

I always envisioned DTSC to be a place where we could promote fitness for all levels and age groups, a friendly community of people from all walks of life, a top-notch experienced and credentialed coaching staff, and of course a well balanced program that is customized to push each athlete to their individual limits all while keeping them safe and getting them as fit as ever!

Through our growth and participation in local events such as large community competitions like the Wodapolooza Fitness Festival here in Bayfront Park, to workouts at The Wharf, partnering with other amazing local businesses around us, and so many great partners we are excited to continue bringing top-notch fitness and experiences to Miami local residents and visitors who pass through our doors from all over the world!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think any road to success is a smooth one, in fact, it was the many bumps and twists and turns that made everything that it took to open DTSC worth it. Like with most businesses opening we had to play the waiting game to open, permits, regulations, all take time and patience. Moving our original gym wasn’t easy, let alone opening a new one. I was fortunate enough to have the right people in place for each discipline from financial forecasting to moving forward with remodeling the space. For me keeping things simple and clear from our branding to membership structure was also extremely important. There are so many moving parts and variables that you can’t help or control. These same variables are not obstacles in the end but rather the opportunity to engage the right resources and learn on the fly through experience. There are no problems only solutions; unexpected things will always happen regardless of how prepared you are so just being able to triage and prioritize those were important as we worked to open our doors!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Downtown Strength & Conditioning Miami – what should we know?
Community. You can buy lots of the tangibles you need in a gym of any kind. That’s the easy part. The intangibles such as the members, the staff, the support system of other gyms, athletes, coaching, vendor partners are the hard part. We had a great community at Muscle Farm and the goal was to preserve that and build on that foundation. With the right people behind you, I feel that anything is possible and DTSC is a great example of that. I spent years building my personal brand and DTSC was a way to take that and expand upon it with our local community. Many of our members are family, friends, and referrals from other members. We work hard to make everyone part of something. We are doing good things, changing people from the outside in. DTSC offers Crossfit and is an affiliated Crossfit gym, while also offering a hybrid approach to each work out where everyone is comfortable with “their” workout of the day. We spend time getting to know our community.

We enjoy giving back to the Miami community by throwing events with our neighbors and being a place where people can go and do something positive for themselves. It’s easy to have a gym, it’s not easy to build a community and that takes the right members and coaching team, which DTSC has and prides itself on as what sets us apart.

What is your favorite childhood memory?
I loved growing up in Brooklyn in the ’80s and ’90s. Summers especially. It was a wild and a much more innocent time in the city. It made me the person I am today and I wouldn’t trade the “New York Hustle” it gave me for anything!
