Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Malone Fidel.
Jennifer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Aunt Jenn has been slinging tea and spice in South Florida since 2011. Our lil’ hole in the wall shop is currently located at the Yellow Green Farmers Market in Hollywood, Fl. We offer organic, kosher, and natural loose leaf teas, herbs, spices, and spice blends. None of our products contain artificial flavors or synthetic sugars. We have a tea bar with Kombucha on tap. Or you can choose from any of the 65 different teas from the “wall of tea” to be made to order, hot or iced. We also feature a specialty menu with delicious bubble teas, milk teas with boba, matcha lattes, & our signature drink Purple Rain (blue spring oolong, butterfly pea flower, & lemonade). We like to think that our little shop is a hidden gem…nestled in the back of the farmers market…you can find high-end teas such as organic slimming oolong, silver needle white tea, jasmine pearls, and organic ceremonial grade matcha green tea powder. If cooking is your thing, we got ya! We have 25 different spice blends to choose from, and over 100 different individual herbs and spices.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur is like a crazy roller coaster ride but you never want to get off. Sales were slow the first couple of years. However, we are happy to say that our annual gross sales have doubled two years in a row. We are looking to add a second location within the next two years.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Aunt Jenn’s Tea & Spice Shop story. Tell us more about the business.
We are really known for our collection of teas. At the farmers market, Aunt Jenn is referred to as “the tea lady.” She even has a tattoo of the “Camellia Sinensis” tea leaf on her forearm. We like to keep things interesting and always have new inventory, rotating, and in stock. We feel that we have filled the gap for this niche market in South Florida. Especially since all of the Teavana stores closed up shop last year. We love our customers that support local. All of our products are stored in airtight clamp down glass jars, great for bulk shopping! We encourage customers to bring their own tins to receive a zero waste discount. We also provide our products in bulk at wholesale prices to local bars, bakeries, and restaurants.
Is there something we can do as a city to improve the outlook for businesses like yours?
South Florida is a wonderful place to be an entrepreneur! If you’re just starting your business, I recommend being a vendor at The Yellow Green Farmers Market. It’s a great incubator for local businesses.
