Meet Jasmine Ortiz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Ortiz.

Jasmine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
With the onset of my musical journey, beginning with my first piano lesson at age three, I have been committed to a life dedicated to practice and performance since childhood. By age six, I was signed to bicoastal acting agency, Abrams Artists, and by age ten, I started guitar lessons and received my SAG card. My early beginnings in entertainment fostered time management skills, and a strong work ethic. These attributes continue to help me succeed through rigorous course material as a Musicianship, Artistry Development & Entrepreneurship (MADE) major with a triple minor in Creative American Music (CAM), Music Business Entertainment Industries (MBEI), and Political Science at the University of Miami. I am heavily involved on campus as outreach chair of the Model United Nations Team, a senator for Student Government, house manager for UMiami College Democrats, a member Climate Reality Project, and the Caribbean Students Association. Balancing my education, career, and civic engagement is of the utmost importance to my personal development.

I have grown so much as an artist and a person throughout my time at UM. I recently released an R&B trap single with SwiftonDemand, Cardi B’s first producer, which is titled, “Making Me Sick.” Even during quarantine, I have been keeping busy collaborating with producers and artists digitally. In the coming weeks, I will be releasing a new collaboration with popular hiphop artist YBN Almighty Jay, called “Facetime.” I am also working with producers such as Cesar, the Emperor, BugzRonin and TrackDilla, who are known for their work with Post Malone, Tyga, Lil Uzi Vert and other top ten recording artists. It is extremely important for me to balance my education with my career aspirations, as I strive to be a well-balanced individual who can serve a greater purpose with the platform I am working to achieve. I am passionate about environmental conservation and want to advocate for ways in which society can further reduce its carbon footprint.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have definitely faced both internal and external struggles on the path to where I am today. Self-doubt can always creep up just as you are on the verge of something great. Moving far away to start a career or education can be very intimidating when you’re leaving everything you’ve ever known, but I have grown so much from the opportunities that doing so has afforded me. I grew up watching my parents overcome the discrimination they faced as Latinos, and become successful small business owners. Their drive and perseverance has always fueled my own determination.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a trilingual urban pop artist, singing in English, Spanish and Chinese. I have a history in the Latin pop market as well as the American r&b/pop market. I play five instruments – guitar, piano, drums, saxophone and viola, and I am a singer/songwriter. I also produce and engineer a lot of my own music on Logic in addition to my many collaborations with successful producers.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
For the immediate future, I am planning out the necessary schematics surrounding the release of my newest single – Facetime with YBN Almighty Jay at the end of May. Beyond that, I am also working on my newest collaborations with producers BugzRonin, TrackDilla, and Cesar, the Emperor. Given the current situation with the Pandemic, some meetings and business trips have been pushed into July or August and an EP release will tentatively be happening this fall or winter. I am very excited about the projects I have coming up, as music has been such an integral part in helping me get through the difficult times we are living through.
