Meet Iris Casanova of Cupcake World in Coral Gables

Today we’d like to introduce you to Iris Casanova.

Iris, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2009, my cupcake-obsessed daughter, Sam, and I signed up for a few cake decorating classes at the local crafts store. After a few weeks, I became more obsessed with the art of piping and decorating than my daughter was. I began baking for my favorite taste-testers, my three children: Amy, Sam, and Matt and shared photos of my treats on social media. In 2011, I shared my newfound passion with the South Florida community at several farmers’ market. After many farmers’ markets, sales to local super markets, and thousands of hours over a KitchenAid, we opened Cupcake World’s storefront in the Gables.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but it has always been fun. I mostly struggled with fulfilling all the orders I received before hiring several full-time staff members. I’d stay up ‘til 5AM or 6AM baking cakes and decorating cookies. Occasionally, my family complained that I didn’t have time for them but having the store has made it a lot easier to fulfill all the orders.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Cupcake World – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Cupcake World is more than a bakery, it’s an experience. Once you enter the store, you’re greeted by all things pink. Our vintage French décor and kind staff transport you to a different place. Apart from our 14 filled cupcakes and food menu, we offer a Build-Your-Own Cupcake Bar in which our guests can choose their cake flavor, filling, toppings, and drizzle. We also have cupcake and cookie decorating classes. All of these things allow our guests to leave with an experience they’ll never forget.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’d love to expand our decorating classes to not just children, but to adults as well. I also want to host more events at the store, so it becomes more than a cafe or restaurant, but rather a full service venue.
