Meet Imani Black

Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Black.

Hi Imani, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi, thank you! I appreciate the opportunity. My story begins just like every little girl who had the baby doll head growing up and just experimenting, not knowing what you are doing!

I was that little girl where I was always into something or trying to figure something out. In middle school, I will always do my friend’s hair like little side ponytails, they weren’t as sleek how you see the ponytails now, but that’s what was in style back then! Years pass by and I gave up on the idea of doing hair! I’m just living in the moment where I’m getting ready to go off to college.

My senior year of high school is when I started to pick it back up, at this time, I’m still brushing it off because I just felt like I wasn’t good enough to be in this type of industry! I remember my step coach kept telling me “you are talented! You should start taking hair more seriously” because I was basically doing everybody’s hair on the team just for a favor or for fun. Ever since then, I took off and haven’t looked back! I started to expand and try different things other than doing the same thing because it gets boring sometimes! Learning never ends!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s no such thing as a “smooth road”, when it comes to success or achieving goals. It’s always obstacles that we have to face, whether it’s mentality, physically, or emotionally. The struggle I had was all mental, as in I was to busy on what others had to say or what others were doing! I’m a thinker and I tend to overthink a lot as well! I’m creative so I always try to find or come up with something that’s different! That makes me stand out from others. I still struggle, but you have to go through the bottom to get to the top!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a hairstylist, I specialize in wigs, sew-ins, bond-ins, and protective styles. I started to get known for my protective styles, which they call “soft locs” & “butterfly locs”. I’m most proud of me, honestly, for not giving up and pushing myself to do more and be more, but I’m not finished yet! This is only the beginning. It’s my creativity.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
