Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Mayo.
Hannah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I fell in love with photography as a teenager and learned as much as I could during college. I started Hannah Mayo Photography in 2008 when I was 20 years old, and have learned practically everything I know about running a business in the years since. It’s been quite an adventure!
My work has gradually evolved to be primarily focused on documentary family sessions, maternity, and birth, and I also really enjoy collaborating with local artist and small businesses for creative commercial projects.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have been growing a family and a business simultaneously since I was still quite green myself, so smooth isn’t exactly how I’d describe the process. It’s been more like a roller coaster! My biggest struggles have been in the area of work/life balance, and there is a constant tension there- I think for all entrepreneurs. Everything about this has been a learning and growing experience for me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in photographing families in an intimate and natural storytelling style. My goal is to capture my clients’ real lives in a way that helps them see the incredible beauty of it. My work primarily consists of lifestyle and documentary family sessions, maternity sessions, and birth stories. When I work on commercial projects, the story is also always my objective. I am also a writer, so I think my natural love for the story just flows into my photography.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Every year I feel that the South Florida setting is becoming more ideal and more receptive to the kind of work I do. It can be difficult starting out in this market, but if you work very hard and become an expert at what you do, people respond.
