Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerry Mujica.
Gerry, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’d like to start by thanking my parents: my father who instilled in me a sense of purpose, hard work, and tenacity of not giving up and always finishing what you start; my mother focused on education, happiness, and mental well-being. She always encouraged me to do what made me happy and stay true to myself.
Both my grandfather and father where entrepreneurs; they owned their own businesses and were great businessmen. From an early age, I worked in the family business, both operating and selling. In my late teens, I would work at the family business in the early mornings, go to class during the day, and return to close the store at night. I attended the University of Miami for both undergraduate and graduate programs. I joined the fraternity Alpha Sigma Phi, which until today remain my best friends and loyal colleagues.
After graduating from the University of Miami and earning my MBA with a specializing in finance, marketing, and international business, I went to work for a company called Nanovation Technologies. Nanovation gave me two very important things: experience and more importantly, it’s where I met my wife. Nanovation surrounded me with some of the smartest accounting and finance individuals I know until this day. Eventually, the company relocated to Northville, MI, and I decided to relocate as well. Unfortunately, after 12 months in 2002, Nanovation went out of business and closed. I packed my bags and returned to Miami were another job opportunity was waiting for me, a start-up called Total Supprt Inc. Total Support, Inc, a back office, outsource solution that specialized in finance, accounting, and IT services. The service was meant for small to medium size business to have access to C-level executives on a part-time basis. This company would lay the foundation for what later would become Greenlight Financial. Over the next few years and a couple of mergers later, the company transitioned and was purchased by another group. The company’s culture had changed and it was time to move on.
Hired by Spherion’s financial reporting department, I gained valuable insight into public company reporting and enhanced my merger and acquisition skills. Fortunate to be surrounded by very capable and smart colleagues, I gained additional experience. However, the company was too big to make an impact, so after only a year I decided to move on. With Total Support fresh on my mind, I decided to start consulting for myself, under Greenlight Financial.
Greenlight Financial was founded in 2007. The mission statement was simple — offer customer-centric, customized accounting, bookkeeping, and finance solutions for small and medium business. Over the last ten years, we have worked with hundreds of clients to keep accurate and reliable accounting through outsourced bookkeeping assistance. We have prepared over 1,000 personal and business tax returns. Finally, we have assisted many foreigners in establishing a business in the United States. Greenlight’s team members are at the heart of our success. The core team has worked together for over ten years. Our first two hires, Deedee Carreras and Monica Uscategui, are both partners after 14 and 10 years of service, respectively. The truth is that without our amazing team, there would be no Greenlight!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Success is never a smooth road there has been a lot of trial and error. We have experienced challenges from understanding the changes in the business landscape to attracting, hiring and maintaining qualified team members. Luckily, we have been able to navigate both the landscaping and the attracting of very qualified candidates. After ten years it’s easy to rest on your laurels, but we are constantly searching for ways to improve our process and customer service.
