Meet Gabi Sklar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabi Sklar.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Growing up in the suburbs of New York, I was constantly inspired by my surroundings. I was a young girl who always loved music; I loved singing, performing, and when I began playing piano at age 7, writing. My earliest memory of singing was being 6 years old playing ‘American Idol’ with my friends; I used a Gatorade bottle as a microphone. When I turned thirteen, I signed to my management and began going back and forth between New York, Nashville and Las Angeles to co-write. Now being eighteen, I go to the University of Miami to pursue music at the Frost School of Music while simultaneously trying to make a name for myself in the industry.

Please tell us about your art.
I write music to inspire others the way my favorite artists (Dua Lipa, Lana Del Rey, Arctic Monkeys, etc.) have inspired me. My goal is making music that people can relate and be like “oh, I’ve been through this” or “I remember a time when this happened to me.” At fourteen, I didn’t know who I wanted to be as an artist because I didn’t know who I wanted to be as a person. I was writing a bunch of records but none of them were Gabi. At first, it took me a while to figure out who I am as a person, and I’m stilling figuring it out every day, but with this process, my sound and artistry evolved as well. I’m currently working on an EP which I’m super excited about because it’s not like anything I’ve already released. I think at this point, everything I am as a person reflects through my music.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The biggest challenge I constantly face in the industry is being misunderstood. People would see this young, tiny girl and assume that I wasn’t educated enough or mature enough without even knowing me. If I was co-writing or in the studio with a producer for the first time, they would think just because I was so young that I’d be someone who I am not. I constantly have to prove myself to people. Many people think being a woman in and of itself would be a challenge in the music industry. I think woman are more powerful than they’ve ever been and we are witnessing and experiencing history being made.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My EP will be launching really soon so be on the lookout for that via Spotify, apple music and iTunes! To keep up with me and my music you can go to my Instagram, @GabiSklar or my website Gabisklar.com.
