Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Allen.
Erika, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been a writer, so it felt natural to start a blog. Through writing and socializing in South Florida, I created my blog Different By Design. In addition, with me desiring a variety of social events in South Florida, I hosted my first event Take Care Girl Soiree In 2018, and plan to put on more events in the future.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely been a struggle, but I still manage to push through. I’m a perfectionist (A Virgo’s nature) so a lot of times, I don’t put out content because I’m afraid it isn’t good enough. I’ve also been trying to revamp my logo and website and sometimes, it gets overwhelming. On top of that, I have a full-time job that is demanding so a lot of times when I get home, I’m exhausted. Even with all the trials I’ve faced, seeing the finished product is what makes it worth it. I have so many creative ideas that run through my brain that I have to write everything down. Bringing these ideas to fruition and seeing the impact that it has keeps me from throwing in the towel.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a writer, culture explorer, and since putting on my first event, an event curator. The purpose of my blog, Different By Design, is not only to express my ideas on things happening in society, but it’s also to showcase others individuality. To make it known that it’s ok to revel in your uniqueness because you are the way you are for a reason. This message is what makes me proud to say that I am a creative. What sets me apart from others is I’m an around the way girl. Some days you’ll see me in makeup, some days you won’t. I’m not afraid to be silly. Though I’m a perfectionist, there are times that I show the not so perfect me. And that’s the thing that I believe is missing from most bloggers/influencers. My event, Take Care Girl Soiree connected woman that probably would never interact with one another, and after the event, they told me they couldn’t wait for the next one. In South Florida, there’s this dog eat dog, crabs in a bucket mentality and I’m trying to bring more unity, especially amongst women.
What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
South Florida is very fickle when it comes to new businesses and events. A lot of times, if it isn’t something promoting glamour and exclusivity, a lot of people aren’t interested. I do believe that there should be more of a push promoting up-and-comers. There are tons of real people doing life-changing things that could reach more people with the right promotion. For people starting out, I would recommend networking outside of your social circle, because you never know who you might come across. I’m still learning this myself, and as I continue to grow and expand my network, I see that the sky’s the limit.
