Meet Emiliano Torres of Xperimento in Westchester

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emiliano Torres.

Emiliano, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story is somewhat strange. Music found me and I started playing the trumpet by mistake in middle school. I didn’t pick band but they made me stay in that class and after I tried the trumpet, I fell in love with music. I started playing in bands and “gigging” while in high school. During my junior year in college, I began touring with a Grammy winner and that’s when I became a professional musician, touring and making money. Right after that, I joined a band named Locos por Juana in around 2003 and that’s when I started writing and arranging music. We got nominated for a Grammy and Latin Grammy soon thereafter. I wanted to start my own project and write my own music and in 2009, I started my band called Xperimento. We literally toured the world because we got picked to do US Navy bases. We toured the Middle East (Bahrain, Qatar, Dubai) Africa (Djibouti), Asia (Japan, Guam) and Guantanamo, Cuba. During my time off, I got called to tour with Ricky Martin and it was a learning experience. Just watching him made me learn how hard you’ve to go to work to become great. I also got in the studio a lot, recording for Kumbia Kings, Ricardo Arjona, and doing all horns for Salaam Remi (Amy Winehouse, Nas). I had the pleasure to work on short stints with Prince and Paolo Nutini also. Doing all this while working with my band Xperimento has gotten me the experience I needed to know what works. We did a Miami mini-documentary a few months ago and it has gotten us major exposure around the world while also touring and doing major festivals like Hangout Fest and Reggae Rise Up. We have a much-anticipated album about to be released in the next couple months produced and written by myself and with the help of many great musicians. I have the privilege to currently tour on my time off with a great artist I admire a lot called Fonseca. I can say that I’ve been “blessed” to be able to experience so much in really a short period of time.

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth ride. There’s been plenty of times where I’ve doubted myself. Times where there are off-seasons and money isn’t there. Music is not a steady career. It’s a career where you really have to believe in yourself every day and you have to grind. There plenty of competition and not enough work. But I can truly say I’ve paid my dues and did what I had to do to be where I am today.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Xperimento story. Tell us more about it.
I’m a songwriter, producer, trumpet player, and backup vocalist. I’ve come up and am known for being a trumpet player but as a musician, you evolve and you become something else as you gain more experience. After touring the world, now my love is in the studio, creating and making something out of nothing. It has been a natural transition for me. I am most proud of how much we’ve accomplished with my band Xperimento. I have a great team and great partner in Camilo our singer. The music we create isn’t like anyone you’ve heard of. We created our own genre and I think that’s what sets us apart from every other band out there.

Is there a specific memory from when you were younger that you really miss?
My favorite memory is probably my first concert when I was seven years old and my dad took me to see his favorite band called Pink Floyd. It was an amazing experience in that a concert was new to me. It was at the Orange Bowl and it rained like crazy and somehow my dad picked me up, put me on his shoulders and we ended up in the first row and I was face to face with David Gilmour!!
