Meet Dawn Pilpel of iWEAR …do you? in Hallandale Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Pilpel.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a child, growing up in Toronto, Canada, I always had a love of fashion and art. This amazing city gave me access to both. My experience at OCAD (Ontario College of Art & Design) sculpted me to look at things beyond what you would normally see.

My industrial line of jewelry – iWEAR …do you? is just that.

I started my company in 2001 in Columbus, OH – iWEAR was originally created as a clothing brand. I quickly realized how hard it was to run a successful business. If it wasn’t for the support of my close friends and family I would have probably given up. The early failures made me stronger and helped me realize my true passion – jewelry design. I decided to venture into what was about to become the core business.

In 2003, I launched the iWEAR …do you? jewelry line. It was definitely not easy to market and sell a brand new line. I traveled from trade show to trade show, spending the majority of the time on the road in order to sell my jewels.

Being an artist and entrepreneur is still very challenging, but since I began I have sold thousands of pieces to customers throughout the USA and Canada.

Today, iWEAR continues to set standards for chic and unique industrial jewelry.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Being an entrepreneur is like riding a roller coaster, the ups and downs are endless. Is it worth it? I would say yes. (today anyway, lol!)

I create a luxury rather than a necessity.

I think the biggest challenge is that I’m a perfectionist and have a hard time delegating responsibilities to others.

I am hands on from the design to creating marketing and sales. Sometimes it does not leave me enough time to allow for true creativity, however, I am learning to let go and rely on others to help grow iWEAR …do you?

iWEAR …do you? – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company is iWEAR …do you? industrial jewelry – making hardware cool one nut at a time. I am known for my handmade industrial jewelry. I hand make all my designs. I use pieces that are stereotypically masculine and create something feminine – jewelry with an edge.

Every design incorporates a commonly (or not so commonly used) piece of actual hardware.

As I’ve always said, “hardware in its simplest form is common metal in a purposeful shape, there’s no reason not to wear it.”

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It is impossible to name one moment in 17 years since I started iWEAR …do you? however, my customers are definitely my biggest pride!

I have a great following, people who took a chance on something different. Ventured outside of the box and discovered something that is unique, fun and beautiful.

Art is a wonderful thing, you can leave the world of so-called “norms” and really stand out, be remembered and admired.

In today’s complicated world, it’s such a small thing, yet so big.
